KOPUTAROA-FOXTON ROAD.
THE CASE F or a SUBSIDIARY HIGHWAY. PROPOSAL REJECTED BY COUNTY COUNCIL. “What about the Shannon-Foxton road?” asked Cr. Ryder, when the question of subsidiary higlnvays AA’as under discussion at the lloroAvhenua County Council meeting on Saturday. The chairman stated that it Avas already a Main Higlnvay. The Koputa-roa-Foxton road had been mentioned to him, bur it Avas not leading directly on to the main road. Cr. Kilsby pointed out that the road from Koputaroa tc. Foxton carried a considerable amount of traffic. Ftoe or six years ago the traffic on the LevinFoxron route AA’as very light compared wHh Avhat it Avas to-day. There Avas quite sufficient traffic to make it a subs diary higlnvay in comparison Avith any of the other roads to be submitted, it was a difficult road to maintain, the cost being far greater than that of any road in the southern end of the County There Avas quite a large amount of traffic from the Foxton end, on the Koputaroa road, besides traffic, from the Soldiers’ Settlement. Seeing that the maintenance was fairly expensive, the Council should endeavour to have iliat, road included among the subsidiary highways. ii The chairman said it Avas not the quesCon of the maintenance of a road that affected the Highways Board. One road might be expensive to maintain because it Avas a long Avay from the source of metal. The question of importance t.o the Highways. Board. Avas the use of a road by the travelling public. If, like the Hokio road, it was used by holiday-makers, it Avas a question of the user paying. Cr. Kilsby: I Avould like to see that road included.
C.'r. Jensen: Include the Otaki Gorge road. There are ears there by the dozen. , , Cr. Kilsby (facetiously): And the Gladstone road. The chairman said that in vicav of the fact that the Council could at any time ask for any road to be made a subsidiary highway, and in view of the position of the main roading, they should limit the declaration to the mads' which he suggested—Waihoanga Te Horo Railway, Waikanae-Waimchn Township, and Lcvin-llokio. If Cr. Kilsby Avished. at a later date, othei roads'could be submitted from time tc time. .
Cr. Kilsby: Foxton to Koputaroa is one of the most important roads in the county. He moved that it be added to the list suggested by the chairman, and ties was seconded by Cr. McLeav-
