NEW LEGISLATION CONCERNING BEES
Act of 1927 Now Opening MEASURES TO PREVENT SPREAD OF DISEASE With tl>o bf the year ;19£7, the Apiatv-s Act of 1908, and amend mcnts of 1913, became legislation of the past and the new A«t of i 1927 came into force. This new Act has several fresh clauses and it is advisab e for all beekeepers to become in tiraate with its requirements. iSome of the most, important requirements are briefly as follows: Apiaries, no matter how small, are required to be registered. Bees must' be kept in frame hives, with frames readily removable iwithout cutting. Where bees are kept in other than frame hives, the Inspector may destroy such hives, bees, honey and beocombs therein, or he msy direct the beekeeper to do so witihin a specified time. The penalty for noncompliance with those clauses is a fine of £2O.
, Except with the written consent of an Inspector, and subject to such eon. ditions as he imposes, no person shall sell, barter, lend or give away, any bees for removal to another location; remove any bees to another location more than ten chains from where previously located; take or remove, any bees, combs, or other appliances from one apiary to another for tht, purpose of extraction of honey, or for use for any other purpose on or in connection with such other apiary. Every person committing a breach of these regulations is liable to a fine of £25.
Every beekeeper in whose apiary disease appears shall forthwith" take proper steps to cure the same aiid to prevent the spread of the disease, and shall within 7 days of first becoming aware of the presence of the disease send written notice thereof to an Inspector. Where any bees, ioney, or appliances or premises where bees have established themselves arelfound to be diseased the Inspector mAy direct the beekeeper or occupier ff the Land to either take 3teps to cure the disease and remove the infection, ot to destroy »uch bees, honey, or appliances, or if of opinion that tho disease cannot satisfactorily be >cured, he may direct the beekeeper or* cccu pier of the land, to destroy by fire within a specified time, such! bees, honey or appliances. If the circumstances so demand, the Inspector may without notice himself s\ieh bees, honey or appliances, an<| give written notice to the beekeejfer, or occupier of the land of the faction taken. If any person fails toi carry out any direction of the Inspector within the specified time the Inspector or any person authorised by him in writing, may himself carry out the necessary work, but nothing therein shall relieve such person from ether liability he may have incurred foT failing to comply with such directions Failure to comply with above frcgula tions renders a beekeeper liable to a penalty of £2O. No person shall expose any bee combs, honey or appliances taken from or used in connection with any in fected hive in such a manner as will allow access thereto by bees until such materials have been thoroughly sterilised by approved methods. No person shall sell, barter, lend, oi <tive to any other person, any bees 01 inpliances from any apiary infected with disease. Any person who com its n breach of this section is liabb to a fine of £SO.
Whenever an Inspector is satisfied consumption, lift may, by order ii. writing addressed to the owner, con s-jgnee or person in charge, condemn the honey and such honey shall;'bo dis posed of in such manner as pre scribed. .
Every person commits an ioffencf and shall # be liable, where no other penalty is expressly prescribed to s fine of £2O, who fails to comply with any direction ""given under this I Act by an inspector or commits any othei breach of the provisions of this Act. No person s-haU be entitled to corn pensatkm for anything lawfully done under the Act.
