POSTMAN'S PALACE

A QVATNT FRENCH HOUSE. One of the quaintest houses in existence is at Hauterives ,a French village. It was erected by a postman, who once saw a picture of tho wonderful palace built by an Indian rajah, and determined that sooner or later he would have a place just like it himself. He began building in 1879, and it took him thirty-four years to complete. The postman did the whole of the work himself in his spare time, being among other things a sculptor, mason and builder as well as architect. The palace is a mixture of all the styles of architecture in existence. It includes a mosque, a feudal castle, a square Algerian house, a Swiss chalet, and a tower. The whole building is decorated with roughly-sculpturod giants, eagles, and ostriches.
