THE BANKER'S BEST LADY FRIEND-THE COW
(By Harry C. Carr, Vico President, Bank of Italy, San Francisco.) I am taking a few minutes for an appreciation of Nature's best gift to mankind, the World's Foster Mother, tli e great' economist, the most consistent utilitarian, the most generous business associate, the most skilful transformer of raw material into a finished product, the miracle of all ages, tho Banker's best lady friend. The Cow.
Thousands, tens of thousands, yes hundreds of thousands ot children, each day, depend upon her not only to supply them with their daily food, for the purpose of satisfying their hunger, but also that their physical resistance may be built up, thereby enabling them, to combat the multitude of diseases to which child life is exposed. Jt'Ls safe to say that without the cow. haJf of the children that are born today would not survive their sixth birthday anniverThe Greatest Economist." Of all the creatures that inhabit this earth, there is not a single one that gives back in value such, a large proportion of what is given her, and keeps so little for herself. If she is a good cow, she does not even grow fat on the food she eats, no matter how much she consumes. And coupled with her economic programme, might also be closely associated her utility value. From the food that is given her she not only gives back to us that which sustains in such a complete manner, both human and animal life, but from the residue of that food she gives back to the soil the elements in perfect combination, that further enriches the soil, which makes it more potent in the production of the materials that are fed to her again, thus creating a perfect cycle of land production, animal consumption, animal production, human consumption, land consumption and then land production, etc., ad infinitum. It is a notorious fact that dairy lands if properly handled, never deteriorate either in productivity or appearance. Generous Bu iness Associate.
the farmer are engaged in a produe.;:o.n and dcvelopSiig>§ays to her friend the me all the ..food! that I can of, a comfortable place to sleep,.-good fresh water,.-treat me like a lady should be treated and I will return you everything I produce, excepting enough to barely' sustain my life. And from 'the increased value of this turnover, which you can either sell or use. you may keep all the profits." Do you happen to know of any other partner, either in a business way, or any other -way, that is so generous ? And now comes one of the most wonderful accomplishments of all. In the transformation of a raw product of the farm into a complete food, that needs absolutely no further preparation before ultimate consumption, she has wrought a miracle beyond human ken. This food she gives to us docs not have to be cooked, it needs nothing added to it, it requires ntothing to be taken from it, it docs not have to be combined with any other material to make it more nourishing, more palatable, or more digestible. It does not even have to : ,£ peeled. It does not >vre to !>o washed, it does not have to be dried, in short it needs no processing or preparation of any kind whatsoever, it is ready for human consumption "as is." Do you happen to know of any other factory that takes the raw maoterial from the farm and within less than twelve hours brings about such a transformation?
She Pays the Banker. She helps the farmer pay the banker. She will go even farther than this, and if left to her own devices and in the event of neglect or carelessness on the part of the fanner, she will do part of the farmer's part and glean his crops. By uniting her forces with those of the farmer, she has transformed waste places into fertile fields, her visible presence beautifies the landscape, her production fortifies the weak, feeds the hungry and enriches the farmer, in consequence of which he pays the banker. My friends, do you wonder then that I say, "The cow is th e Banker's best lady friend?" Hail to the cow! And finally lot us not forget that in addition to her many accomplishments and qualifications, a portion of which I have already recited, that she is tho direct maternal ancestor of that individual, whose name is constantly in the mouth of the great I American Public, "The Bull."
