SELWYN SIMCOX'S ELEVEN ON TOUR. SUCCESSES AGAINST HAWKE'S + BAY TEAMS. An eleven got together by F. S. Simcox, of Otaki is now touring in Hawkes Bay. The personnel of the eleven is D. S. and J. Mackenzie, .T. Varnhain, Dr. Hunter, 11. Bull and F. Phillips, all of Levin; F. S. Simcox, of Otaki; R. Spademan, Napier; and three Wanganui Collegiate school boys, J. E. Giesen, K, W. Barton and B. B. Lambert . SOUTHERN "S. AT DANNEVIRKE This eleven began with a two-day match at Dannevirke on Wednesday and Thursday December 28th and 29th against the 'Southern Hawke's Bay Association. The visitors wqn the toss and made 175, Phillips playing a very safe innings for 52. He was then given run out, a very questionable decision, as the batsmen appeared to have crossed l>y five or six years, the umpire holding that they had not crossed. Southern H.B. replied with 113, Barton (4 for 31) bowling bggt. The wicket, matting on grass, had been watered too much over-night, and the ball was too tricky for the touring eleven in their second innings, only 34 being scored. This left the home team with 96 to win, but though they had 4 wickets down for 41, their innings closed for 73, leaving the visitors winners by 23 j-uns. Following are the scores: —

OENTRAL H.E. AT WAIPUKURAU

The travelling eleven played the seeon .1 match of its tour against the Cenirnl Hawkes Bay Association at Waipukurau on Friday and Saturday, December 30th and 31st, and won by 240 runs. It was a matting wicket on concrete, with a rough outfield, so l hat Horowhenua members of the eleven felt almost at home. The visitors again won the loss, and made 251, Giesen playing a fine innings for 78. J. .Mackenzie and Dr. Hunter rattled up their 42 and 3d not out in quick time, each hitting six' fours. Central Hawkes Bay replied with 143, the visitors' bowling being quite good. J. Mackenzie was bowling very fast and accurately, and his bowling seemed to be as much of a surprise to some of the.visitors as it was to his team-mates. Going in again, with three-quarters of an hour to play, the tourers had one wicket down for 57 at <3 o'clock. Continuing at 10 a.m. the next, day they wcw all out by '2.40, with a total of 1200. Phillips 20, 11. Bull 48, and Giesen 33 did well. D. S. Mackenzie had the bowlers almost in despair, and had to get himself out (for si 5) to let the last two men in. Barton batted safely and stylishly for his 48. In the first innings Varnham had the misfortune to bo struck on the cheekby the ball, which hit on the edge of his bat while he was swinging round to a full pitch to leg, and a substitute had to be provided. . In the three hours left for play the

home team adopted defensive tactics, and the visitors were greatly relieved when the last man was run out twenty minutes before time. Hartland, an old Christ's College boy, played a great defensive game for his 92 not out. J. Mackenzie, the visitors' fastest bowler (Barton being also fast), made a brilliant "caught and bowled." The ball was hit hard towards him, he put out hia left hand, high up, and the ball stuck in it—a wonderful feat for a fast bowler. Hartland, a slow bowler, took eight wickets for 159 in the first innings—a vcijy good performance. Following are the scores: — S. SILICON'S ELEVEN. First Innings.
