SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present —the Mayor (Mr E. Butt), Councillors Gunning,. Thwaites, Hyde, Downes, Richardson, Curran Jnr., and Curran sen. THE PETROL TAX. From the Minister of Public Works acknowledging receipt of the Council's resolution in regard to the Petrol Tax, the basis -of allocation be altered from population to the mileage basis, and stating that the matter will have the Government's careful eqnjsideration. SHANNON MAILS. Prom the Secretary-General Post Office with reference to the mail arrangements at Shannon and advising that • it has been arranged for parcels for Shannon posted at Wellington after 2 p.m. to be despatched to Shannon by the early train on the' following. morning . The Secretary also points out that, as represented, Shannon is now entitled to the extended hours of telephone exchange attendance. "With this fact in mind, I have again looked into the question of sorting an evening mail at Shannon, but regret that the circumstances are such that ~ the' sorting of an evening mail still , would not be warranted." ! ' UNEMPLOYED RELIEF. j From the Minister of Public Works that the public subscriptions collected locally for the relief of unemployed will be subsidised on a £ fon £ basis. It was resolved to continue the footpath formation in Plimmer Terrace from the plot to Grey Street, the work t6 v bfi commenced immediately. The \Council will also be pleased to receive further subscriptions for the relief of unemployed. , MOTOR REGULATIONS.
The Town Clerk tabled a report in connection with the draft regulations under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1924, which deals with motor traffic generally and provisions made for the equipment, road rules, signals signs and speeds, accidents offences and penalties. STREET WORKS. .
. The Borough Foreman reported that 68 yards of metal had been carted to Grand and Ballance Streets, Plimmer Terrace and Main North Road. The grader has been working on the Main Highway, also on Foxton, Grey and East Roads. As instructed the Foxton road drain received attention also the drain from Ballance Street to Graham Street. The bridge over.Stansell's drain has been lifted, and pipts put in to take the overflow from the culvert crossing the road opposite the Post Office. The water mains have not been scoured this, month on account of not sufficient water in the reservoir. RANGER'S REPORT. The Borough Ranger reported that since his last report he has made num- ' erous night visits and found the streets _l!l_L . „THE. _ The Reserve and Cemetery Committee reported that the grass had been cut and cleared in the Cemetery, and the Cemetery fence was being put back to its original position. A broken pipe was the cause of no water reaching the Cemetery, but this matter had now been rectified. Councillor Curran, jur., asked if it was possible to have the Borough lawn mower at work on the Domain to get the ground in order for the New Year's Day Sports.—lt was resolved to have the grass cut immediately after Christmas. Councillors Curran senr., and Richardson offered assistance in this respect. The erection of a shed -. at the Domain to house the mower was sanctioned. POLES FOR FOOTBRIDGE.
With reference to the footbridge over Stansell Drain leading from Graham to Vogel Street, the Mayor stated that ' poles suitable for this purpose . could "be purchased from the Power Board for £3 15s each.
Councillor Curran stated that some old stringers were lying at the Otaura Bridge which would answer this purpose. The Town Clerk was instructed to ascertain the cost of same from the Horowhenua County Council. THE WATERWORKS. The Chairman of the Water Works Committee reported that, as agreed to fy the Council, the tree had been put ,in the creek at the headworks. He was satisfied with the work and was of the opinion that the job would last. The Mayor suggested that if a, fence was erected at the headworks along part of the- galleries it would serve as a screen to protect the galleries. The Foreman stated that this would be oi benefit and would keep a constant stream of water over the galleries; The Council resolved to pay a" visit to the headworks and inspect the work carried out.
BOROUGH FOREMAN'S DWELLING
Councillor Thwaites, chairman of the building committee, said on inspecting the Foreman's Dwelling it was found necessary to pull down the chimney and re-erect same, also the top of the other chimney was found to be weathering and received repairs . A new stove was also required but this was left until later and it might be possible to purchase one from the Mangahao Works at a reasonable price. The dividing fence between the Council offices and Mr. Hook's property was
erected,, Mr. Hook to pay half cost. ' Speaking further regarding permanent alterations to the foreman's dwelling
he suggested utilising the funds in hand supplimented by a loan fov the purpose of erecting a worker's dwelling. The section and dwelling could 1 then be sold to the foreman on the same terms as the present council houses. This would put the proposition on a business footing so far as the Council were concerned and should he leave Shannon at some future date could sell his equity in the property. ■ Councillor Curran, jur., asked if the Council would take over the foreman's liability in the event df his leaving Shannon. Councillor Thwaites replying that it would be necessary for ■the Foreman to find a purchaser. . The question of the cost of the Bail-
way Houses being erected locally was gone into, the Town Clerk being in-, structed to ascertain if the Department would sell the timber and also the cost of same landed at Shannon. Further discussion was held over .to next meeting, Councillor Hyde pointing out that before going further it was necessary to obtain the foreman's opinion on the suggestion. t
