MORE RELIEF WANTED.

MOTION FAILS OF ITS PURPOSE

After the ordinary lousiness had beer, disposed of at "the Hcrowher.ua County Council meeting on Saturday, the tol. lowing motion avus moved by Cr. Jensen: . '.,, , 'That this meeting views with alarm anv further taxes for Main Highways as "we have already contributed mor< than one-half share to the Mam High ■ways and consider that had the rate payers known the position as it is today, they *~z''l not have voted in favour of the, loan. This Council therefore trusts that Jhe Government will bring down [legisflfeion to give the already over-burdened ratepayers some substantial measure of relief. '•' . The Chairman t.aid that the clause about viewing with alarm any fresh i taxes did not meet with his approval, as this country was reaching a stage where the user must pay for the road. Whilst ha would like to second the motion he could hardly do so while it. was in the form submitted. Cr: Jensen j wanted some legislation to give an amendment of the Highways Ai»t. The speaker couid support a good deal of the motion, which he would second pro forma, .co as to open a discussion. Where ratepayers had put then- hands in their pocluts to construct these roads, they were entitled to more relief than they were getting. Cr. Jensen was on the right track,, but Mn the meantime a motion ought to be framed on modified lines. . Cr Rvder suggested that the UiairV: man and Cr. Jensen confer and draw up a suitable motion. Cr. Kilsby seconded the notion. Cr.'Jensen explained that the motion did not' condemn the petrol tax but sought more relief, which was not coming from that tax except by way of maintenance. The Chairman pointed out that ihe motion, if passed, was not likely to have any effect this session. Cr. Jensen said that the object of the motion was in the direction of having legislation secured to give relief from additional taxation to counties Which had improved the standard of their roads. , . r i*he motion was lost by five vot'es to three. The Chairman said it would -•' have been better if Cr. Jensen had withdrawn it and brought it down in a revised form at the next meeting.
