STRAIGHT EIGHTS
Signs of the times indicate an increasing interest in the engine with eight vertical cylinders in line,' and described as the straight eight, says the ‘Automobile Engineer.’ Historical records show that an engine of this type was first constructed in 1902 but no considerable use of the design was made until 1913, when it began to have .some slight popularity for aviation purposes. From 1920 onwards it was favoured for racing, and more recently for passenger cars of the more powerful types. The advance has been such that there are now some thirty firms producing straight-eight engines, and their numbers are estimated at over 20 per cent of the total production in America and nearly 10 per cent in Europe.
