DISCUSSED BY PUBLIC MEETING

COUNCIL REQUESTED TO PREVENT FURTHER LOSS.

The calling of a public meeting by the Levin branch of the Farmers Union resulted in the attendance of about 00 residents of the district, m &t. Mary's Hall on Saturday afternoon to discuss the excess of nearly £14,000 in the expenditure on Main Highways construction by the Horowhemia Lounty Council when compared with the estimate. Mr 11. Denton, president of the branch, was in the chair, and the Qpuntv Council was represented by its -chairman (Mr'G. A. Monk), Cvs. Catley, McLeavcv, Kilsby and Jensen. Ihe criticism "was led off by Mr H. B. Cooper (the author of a letter to the Chronicle on the subjeet), and was continued by a number of other ratepayers. The County Chairman made a comprehensive statement in reply/-and after further discussion a resolution was unanimously passed as follows: /.,:■

That this meeting views with alarm the huge expenditure of the Te Horo riding of the Horowhenua County Council in connection with the Main .Highways . construction, and calls upon the Council to take the only action that will prevent a recurrence in other ridings.
