THE HOME-MADE HEM
Any woman who makes her own underclothes will find the following a quick and effective method of edging them. Prepare for a narrow hem, but use a running stitch. Every third stitch take the needle over the hem and back to the running thread, forming a loop (as for button-holing) which catches in the material: then another small stitch at the base of the loop to keep it taut. The scal-lop-like effect is successful with any soft and fine material, but with georgette "it is particularly good. Straps can be made by narrow bands hemmed each side in this way. ■ Another good method of decoration is to use a transfer for Richelieu work. Tack a piece of material of another colour beneath the stamped design on the garment then embroider and cut out as usual. Lilac linen was decorated in this manner by embroidery in green with cut-out pieces revealing a soft blue underneath.
