ENGINEER'S REPORT
The report of the engineer (Mr. W. N. Anderson), as follows, was adopted at the meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday: — "During- the period just ended, the weather has .been fairly settled and work generally throughout the County has progressed in a satisfactory manner.
Tokomaru Riding.-—The roads, etc., in this Riding arc in fair order. No. 1 power grader is working in this Riding and has graded the main road from Shannon to north boundary, and is at present working on district roads. A quantity of maintenance metal lias been put out on the main north road, Shannon-Foxton Road and several of the district roads. A 42 inch concrete pipe culvert on Kingsto»e Road has been repaired and straightened and a quantity of gravel has been removed from under the bridges on this road. Wirokino Riding.—The majority of the roads in this Riding are in good order. No. 1 power grader has been at work on main and district roads almost continuously during the period. Maintenance metal has been put out nn Levin-Shannon, Levin-Wirokino, HeatKerlea, Mark's," Tararua and Settlement Roads. The bridge over the Hokio stream on the Hokio-Waitarere Road, has been completed and twin culvert in water race on Boach Road has been removed and replaced with single culvert. A section of Tararua Road in front of salcyards is being prepared as a parking area for cars. Shoulders on the main road from Kimberley Road to the Waikawa Bridge have been trimmed by grader and rolled. Otaki Riding.—l have very little to report on in this Riding the roads being in fair order. The shoulders on main road from Waikawa Bridge to Manakau Bridge have been trimmed and rolled. Water-tables on Rahui Road have been attended to. Two bridges on Convent Road, Otaki, have been erected.
Te Horo Riding.—The majority of the roads in this Riding are in fair repair. Maintenance metal have been put out on the Te Horo Beach and Soldiers' Roads. A. number of metal dumps and a quantity of metal chips and dust have been put out on the Otaki Gorge Road from overhead bridge to Lethbridge's. Ranger's report. —The ranger (Mr. G. Watson) reports having impounded ** - 1 "--" J ~ «f ..wandering- jdoek during the., period. "" -—•■-- —~~ Cr. Bryant remarked that the footpaths in Manakau had been on the estimates for a second year. The engineer stated that this work was being put in hand almost at once. Cr. Jensen stated that he spent Friday afternoon travelling over most of the roads of the Tc Horo Riding, and with the exception of the Otaki Gorge Road, and he found that they were in very fair condition. Cr. Jensen asked why the straighening of the Mangaone stream had been delaj'ed. The chairman stated that unless the engineer had been given definite instructions from the Council, he was not justified in doing this work. Then engineer stated that this work had only been suggested at various times in the last year or two, "and In had no instructions from the Councl to do it. It was resolved that Cr. Jensen and the engineer look into the matter, oi the spot. On the motion of Cr. Catley, second ed by Cr. MeLeavey, the engineer w-a. k instructed to have repairs effected ■ t< the Ohau Wieist Soldiers"' Road am Hogg's Road; also to give attentioi to Muhunoa West Road and the'roai. to Papaitonga Lake.
