TAR-GROUTED ROADS.
BEST FOR COUNTRY DISTRICTS. Mr. G. V. Pearce moved the following motion at the annual meeting of the AVaugamii Automobile Association: “That as 60 per cent, of the maintenance of the main roads is paid, by car owners from the tyre tax and license fees, the Wanganui Automobile Association protests against loo&8 shingle, without tar, being used to surface the main roads, when tar-sealing would be cheaper and would save motorists from 10 to 20 per cent, in wear of tyres amd cost of petrol.” fl{ii speaking fio j the jmotion, Mr. Pearce said that in the Taranaki province there were nine counties which had tarred their main roads without obtaining a subsidy from the Government. The speaker stated that at Kakaramea there was a piece of targrouted which had been down for 14 years, and was as good to-day as when .t was laid. He contended that targrouting was the best for county roads, and tar-sealing was the cheapest method. The latter method had proved successful in the liawera County, and he thought it could be applied at half the cost of work done on the Waitoiaru County Roads.
The motion was opposed by Mr. N. R. Bain who said that it was bearing on an engineering question. He moved as an amendment that the matter be referred to the executive.
The motion was carried, and it was decided to forward a copy of the resolution to all county councils in the association 's district.
