SHANNON DEFEAT COUNTY.
After some weeks without a game the Shannon seniors met County on the Domain on Saturday m the first round of the Nash Cup fixtures. The conditions were far from ideal, the ground being slippery, while a drizzling rain fell throughout the game which made the ball greasy to handle. Both teams gave a very poor exhibition of Bugby, this no doubt being largely due to the fact that neither team had played together for some time. At times the game resembled that of a practice game more than a cup fixture. In the first half Shannon had County on the defensive most of the time. The game* had not been in progress long when Shannon, who had the visitors penned in their 25, by a forward rush forced their way through the defence resulting, in S. Bobbie scoring, Hunt failing to add the extra points. On the ball going into play County rushed th* leather into Shannon’s territory,
compelling the latter to force. Soon after-'they were awarded a free kick, but AlcDonald’s kick at goal, although well directed, fell short. A forward rush put into operation by S. Robbie and followed up by E. Satherley was stemmed when near the line by a County player kicking into touch. Play was returned to midfield by a good kick by J. McDonald, which put the Reds on ’.he defensive. Off-side play gave the Blues an opportunity to equalise the score, but AlcDonald’s attempt again fell short. The Reds now opened up the game among their backs and by liort passing bouts worked their way back, a Short punt by Hunt carrying play near their opponents’ line, but Duim saved. Soon after P. Satherley ■ marked near the touch line on the 25. i-Ie short punted and following up his kick was forced out. From, a scrum off side play gave Hunt'a chance to convert, but the ball went wide. The Blues carried play to the Reds’ 25, where P. Satherley; intercepting, dribbled the ball through and picking up raced down the field and on being col lared sent the ball on to Hakaraia who was grassed near the line. A scrum followed and Chisholm getting possession cleared. The spell ended with Shannon hoi ling an advantage of three points. On resuming the Blues forwards attacked the Red territory with a dribbling rush. From the scrums which followed Chisholm endeavoured to open up,play among his backs, but the Red*, were collaring well and the visitors were unable to penetrate the defence, although on two occasions they were close to scoring. Finally the Reds pushed them back and a rear division movement saw play removed to the other end, placing the Blues on the defensive, ending in Hakaraia scoring. The kick at goal i 'ailcd to increase the score Following this, play was up and down the field, the advantage being with the visitors, who failed to score, Shannon thus winning by 6 to nil.
