Harold Edward Hook, hair(lresscr* of Shannon, was chained in the Police Court at Palmerston North, yesterday morning, witoh having used his shop as a common gaming-house, Senior-Detec-tive Quirke informed Air btout, S.M., that the premises were visited by the Police on Saturday. No bets were taken while they were there, doubtless owing to their presence being known; but records o± extensive betting were found, showing that hotAvcsn Junuary 3id and 27th over £SOO was taken. The maximum fine was asked for. Defendant denied doing the amount of business alleged. When he Was agent for a Palmerston N. firm he had done a bigger volume of business, but at present he was doing little. . . ... , “Well, you know it is an illegal business, ’ ’ said the Magistrate, in imposing the maximum penalty of £IOO. .
