FIREMEN’S SOCIAL.

NO ALCOHOLIC LIQUOR

AUCKLAND, Aug. 25

Alcoholic liquor will not be allowed at the Mount Eden Fire Brigade an-nual-smoke concert and presentation of honours. This‘decision was made by (lie Borough Council. The secretary to the brigade wrote staling that if a permit for alcoholic liquor were not granted the firemen would have to go outside the district, leaving only two men at the station. The Mayor (Mr. E. H. Potter) said that the privilege had always been granted, but through an alteration of The rules no alcoholic liquor was to be allowed on the premises. Personally, he thought that the rule could be waived on this occasion, but it was a matter for the councillors to decide. Mr. D. C. Fraser: Who does the letter come from?

The Mayor: -The secretary to the brigade. Mr. Fraser: Well, he is a teetotaller, 'is he not?

The Mayor: The brigade have been granted permission for 25 years now and I see no objection. Mr. -Fraser moved that the council should adhere to its former decision not to grant a permit for alcoholic liquor. Mr. Smith said that he considered the firemen were entitled to a “spot” under the supervision of the mayor. The motion was carried.
