PATRIOTIC SOCIETY.

The quarterly meeting of the Horowhenua County Patriotic Society was held yesterday afternoon, there being present: Messrs P. W. Goldsmith (in the chair), J. M. Richards, J. G. McLean, C. Nees, T. Clifford, G. P. Catley, T. G. Fraser, W. E. Kilsby, .S. A. Broadbelt, D. G. Hamilton, Mrs T. F. Gibson, and Mr W. F. Walkley (secretary). Leave of absence'was granted to Messrs C. S. Keedwell, L. I. Howell and A McLeavey. The Audit Office acknowledged receipt of the balance-sheet for the year ended March 31st, 1926.

Reports on the administration of funds were received from the National War Funds Council.

A circular was also received from the ,- above Council announcing the allocating of £SOOO for the relief of distress among unemployed returned soldiers. Inauiries had been made by the secretary of the Society by correspondence with the principal settlements in the district. The replies were to the effect that no relief was required %t Otaki, . Paekakariki and Waikanae, but that there were six casts at Shannon, where a scheme of relief work has been inaugurated by the Borough Council. Several grants were made during the quarter, from the Society's funds, to men who were suffering through lack of work, and these were confirmed. Three applications for loans were declined, the Society having no funds available for this purpose. Hdiiy grants for temporary lelief by and through other Patiiotic Societies were dealt with, and it was" reported t hat much benefit had resulted to the cases concerned, through the operation of this system. The number of applications in'this respect during the "past qur.rter has been rather greater than usual. • ..-■*•

A total of £49 9s was refunded by returned soldiers on account of loans, during the quarter.
