HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council was held at Levin on Saturday: Claim for Work on Road. Mr. J. Rasmussen, Rikiorangi, wrote asking for compensation for work which he had done on the road giving access to his property. The chairman stated that Mr. Rasmussen took a farm 79 chains from the existing road and said he would make the necessary road if the Council would subsidise him as much as they could. The chairman thought that Mr. Rasmussen expended labour on this road, of his own volition, to the extent of perhaps £2OO, and he believed that the Council subsidised it from time to time to the extent of about £IOO. A year ago he said his water-tables were not in good - order, and the ehairman advised him to put in a week's work on them. Mr. Rasmussen did so, but did not send in any account for it. He hao unfortunately been sued for his rates. and he proposed to raise the defencethat the Council owed him £7O. The Council did not owe him that, but possibly was indebted to him for a week-'* work, if he had carried out what the chairman told him to do.

It was decided to write to Mr. Rasmussen informing him that if he sends in an account for the work authorised by the chairman, he will be paid for it. Miranui Township. An application was received from the A. and L. Seifert Flaxdrcssing Company for the Council to take over Webb Street, in Miranui Township. The chairman explained that the company had laid out the township to give their employees an opportunity oi' acquiring sections for re.-'.dential j urposes near the mill. The matter was referred to the 'Works Committee, who are to confer •with the engineer. Pukehou Block. Mr. George Bcvan wrote stating that ..he Native Land Court had made an interlocutory order for the partition of Pukehou 4b block, and he wished to know if the Council still intende.l to cake certain land for a road. The chairman stated that this matter had been before the Council on a previous occasion and there was some opposition to their relinquishing the right-of-way. The question was referred to the Works Committee.

General. On the motion of Cr. MeLeavey, seconded by Cr. Kilsby, it was resolved chat the" collecting of the Hokiq-Wai-.arere Road bridge rate be continued n 1928, and discontinued in 1929. Accounts--amounting to £SS2I 14s 4d ,vere passed for payment, including ;2068 for interest and sinking fund. Cr. Catley reported that he and Cr. Kilsby had waited on Mr. Sloan, of /oxton Road, who wanted to put a pipe under the road to carry off surplus .vater. —It was decided that Mr. Sloan be granted a pipe on condition that he carries out the work to the satisfaction of the engineer.

With regards to Heights Road, for which Messrs Robbie Bros, had asked for assistance, Cr. Catley stated thai he visited the locality on July 13th and arranged with the .applicants to carry out necessary repairs, and the work was now almost completed. Somebody .should have authority to clear smal. slips away as they occur; much damage could thus bo averted. —Cr. Catley's report was adopted, and the chairman thanked him for having made .wo visits to the road in connection with the work.

Cr. Kilsby stated that Gladstone S-oad required attention, owing to slips principally. l —The matter was rcfcrre-i L o the engineer. Cr. McLeavey asked if anything had been done in regard to having certain trees removed on the Ohau West Road, which were obstructing the view.—Tin.chairman stated that the engineer was .o interview the owner.

Cr. Ryder stated that on the Main. Sighway between his property and the Ohau store, the shoulders were being cut up very badly, the bituaen to break away.—lt was resolved o make an inspection of the locality. Cr. Bryant staled that heavy load< jf timber were coming down the NortlManakau road, and it was being badly cut up. A good deal of metal ivould be required to put it in order. He thought that the sawmill proprietor.were under an agreement to pay £.">() a year towards it, but. that, they only paid once. Cr. Barber stated that the Public Works Department had been taking a dredge down the Tokomaru stream and had lifted two bridges that were under the control of the Council.—The chairman explained that the District Engineer advertised that it was proposed to lift the bridges. Cr. Whyte mentioned the queslion ol maintenance metal for the /northern end of the district. He stated thai for some time past the contractors had been getting his mc.tal from the river near Te Nukanui mill, but the pit was now closed to him.. Recently he opened a pit near Mrs. Jamieson's, but the metal was not up to standard, and so that pit was closed up. The only suitable metal that Cr. Whyte could see was at Waterfall Creek, on Mr. Judd's property. Mr. Judd had put a tramline eight or ten chains into his property. He wanted the Council to put in a bin and he could bring out the metal at a cheaper rate and would allow the County to go in and remove what it wanted for maintenance. The •County engineer went up two or Ihree months ago and found a suitable site for a bin, but nothing further had been done.—The matter was referred to the Councillors for the riding and the engineer, with power to act.
