VISITORS CONSTANTLY ON THE ATTACK,

CARTERTON, Last Night.

Under ideal weather conditions yesterday, Wairarapa lost their claim to the Ranfurly Shield to Manawhenua by 18 points to IG. The visitors played better football in all departments and on the day thoroughly deserved their win. The attendance was between 3000 and 4000. The teams were : Wairarapa. Full-back: E. B. Booth. tors kicked-off and immediately instituted a strong attack mainly by the , forwards, Jacob being particularly prominent. ManaAvhenua demonstrated their superiority in the forwards, completely over-running Wairarapa and catching the backs with the ball. Pressure on the home line was almost continuous, but occasionally Wairarapa burst through. In one of these forays, Cook e picked up mid-eld, passed to Yates, who centred a high one to goal. I. Harvey speedily followed-up and beat all the Manawhenua backs to the ball and scored under the posts. Cundy converted. —Wairarapa, 5: Manawhenua, 0. The visitors immediately returned to the attack, but Wairarapa staved them out and again in mid-field opened a scoring movement. Donald pick-ed-up, passed to Cooke, w'ho, instead of passing, dummied and cut through a crowd to score a brilliant one midway from the corner. Cundy again goaled, giving Wairarapa the lead 10 to nil. Manawhenua put forw T ard better efforts and succeeded in carrying the ball up to the line, where T. Parsons picked up and dived over. Brophy goaled.—Wairarapa, 10: Manawhenua, 5. The home forwards livened up and carried play up-field, where K. Reid got possession, and stalling off all attacks, scored a fine try unaided in the corner. Cundy failed and the spell tnded : Wairarapa 13 Manawhenua 10 The .second spell saw the visitors still aggressive and Wairarapa was lu pt penned in pretty well all through except for sudden spasmodic concerted play. With Wairarapa defending. Booth, the full-back, mulled badly. J Donald stepped in and look the ball and passed. Hunt intercepted brilliantly and scored near the posts Jacobs goaling and giving Manawhenua the lead 15 to 13. Wairarapa were now playing like a beaten team, but • were managing to stem the score from mounting. Broplis hurt his shoulder at the end of the first spell, Dewe taking his place. G. Booth (Wairarapa) hurt his leg and retired, Williams going on. J. Donald hurt his timid and retired within a few minutes Of the end of the game, Q. Donald taking his place.

Still the visitors dominated the game and W. Parata started a fine passing bout which ended in McDonald going over in the corner nicely Jacobs failed to goal.—Manawhenua. 18; Wairarapa, 13.
