MANAWHENUA WINS.
FAST TIRELESS FORWARDS.
SHIELD-HOLDERS OUTPLAYED
Another sensational chapter was added to the chequered story of the Ranfurly Shield when on Saturday the chosen of Manawhenua defeated Wairarapa by 18 points to 16 —a result totally unexpected by the supporters of either side.
Should the Appeal Court of the New Zealand Rugby Union award the muchdiscussed game between Hawkes Ray and Wairarapa to the latter team, then Manawhenua, will become the proud holders of the most coveted trophy in Now Zealand’s national game The magnificent attack of the Manawhenua vanguard was the chief instrument of victory, but the backs also played a.r important part. Reports from both sides show that the victors completely dominated the play, and Wairarapa were a beaten team right through.
Should the Shield come to Palmserston North—as appears most likely—there will be some thrilling contests. Within the next six weeks Manawhenua is scheduled to play Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago.
