SHANNON BOWLING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING. The Shannon Bowling Club’s annual meeting was held, in the Pavilion on Friday evening, there being a fair attendance of members. The president (Mr. A. T. White) presided. PRESIDENT’S REPORT. The following is the President’s report on the past season: — “The year 1926-27 was in all quite a successful year from the Club’s point of view, yet disappointing from the fact that there seemed to be a lack of enthusiasm and in consequence the green seldom saw what could be called a full green. Again, the playing of singles and pair tournament games on the Club days tended in a measure to spoil the afternoon’s from the club’s point of view. In regard to this I would suggest that Wednesday and Saturday afternoons be reserved for club play only and that private matches, as I may term them, be played at other times, but of this more later. Our 'success as a Club was far beyond our expectations. Our rinks won the Kinneburgh Feathers, Dixon Cup, Manson and Barr Cup(2) and the Triangular Shield. We still hold the Manson and BanCup and the Triangular Shield. Our teams lost in contesting the Takaroa Cup and the Ainsley Shield. Our in-ter-club games were not altogether a success. The Gala Days arranged for by the Centre in a measure interfered with our arrangements, and further, the response was not as it should have been. I cannot recall an instances, save one, where more than three rinks travelled and in the main it was difficult to get two away. »I would here suggest that skips when making arrangements for private rinks, should consult the Club’s official list before committing themselves. In no case this year was an interclub visit returned. I would further suggest that we make no arrangements this year until the Centre Gala Days were arranged. “Regarding our Club Tournaments. — The Singles games were won by Mr. J. Roach, who very ably represented our interests at the Centre Tournaments, where he became runner-up. The Pairs tournaments was won by Messrs Murray and Moyilian. Messrs Bert Spencer and 11. Jones represented us at the Central Tourney. Concerning this, I must state that whilst recognising sentiment as an admirable trait, of our Nation, I think it should be cut right' out in our Tournaments. The matches should be definitely fixed by a responsible committee and those who cannot participate should forfeit. This, at first, may appear drastic, but one must remember that later others are made to suffer through no fault of their own.

“Mr W. 11. Gunning’s cups were won by Messrs Oliver and H. Butt. Labour Day Tournament pairs was Avon by Messrs Clayton and Whibley; Electric Light Tourney; Messrs Bert Spencer and J. T. Boa Ts.

“Improvements to the green have been effected as follows: —Two sides have had new- edging, whilst on the closeing of the green it was top-dress-ed i I trust the attention given will produce the desired effect. I regret to state the Electric Light was not utilised to the best advantage. The receipts from this source amounted to less than one-third of the amount that had to be paid to the Power Board. It is hoped that members as a whole, will exert themselves to liven up bowling matters in Shannon. Considering the value of improvements put into the Green our finances may be considered satisfactory. It was unfortunate that, after having such a successful opening, continued wet weather prevented 'the use of the green, whilst upkeep had to be paid. I would suggest that a later opening be considered this season. Our thanks are due to the various Committees for their earnest attention to their ever onerous duties; to Messrs E. Butt and Mason for the management of the Crib Tournaments, coupled with the names of their wives, and to our Secretary W. Mason; to those gentlemen who put- their cars at the Club’s service and to Mr. Gunning for cups for competition. In conclusion I desire to thank the Club for its loyal support during my term of office. In moving the adoption of the report, Mr. Gunning said it had been exceedingly fell thought out and the suggestions .vere .vorrhy of consideration. Arrangements should be 'adhered to where games \ were fixed for certain dates and defaulter; should lose, particularly in club games. Mr. Morgan, in seconding the adoption of the report, further enlarged on players failing to play their games on the" dates fixed, stating that the Committee went to a lot of trouble as to ways and means of completing the games. .He thought there was too much sentiment.

The report, was then adopted BALANCE SHEET.

The secretary (Mr. A. Mason) in presenting the balance sheet, stated that he did so with the feeling that, although it, showed a debit balance, they would agree that the Club has had a successful season financially. The Club only had a membership of 39, which included one honorary member and one country member, and he was sorry to relate they were losing six of these members for the .coming season, which would mean a very hard knock to such a small Club. The finance was considerably assisted by the proceeds of the Ball and Cribbage Club, which amounted to approximately £2B. A considerable amount of improvements had been completed during tlie past season. The bowling green and croquet lawns were topdressed incurring an expenditure of £25, and also edging on two sides of the green at a cost for timber and labour of £2B. In conclusion he thanked the President, the officers, members of Committees and others for the assistance given him during the past season and- he wished the Club a more successful season next Mr Gunning suggested that the Club give a little more attention to gala nights, and try to get neighbouring Clubs to join in. There had been a lot of expense that would be non-recur-ring next season, and he was of opinion that tlie financial position was quite satisfactory. ' .The Secretary stated that he hoped the deficiency would nw wiped out be-

fore the season started from the proceeds of the Cribbage Club and a ball which it was intended to hold.
