"OPEN DEFIANCE."
MANAWHENUA CAMP QUESTION. The question of training camps for teams before representative matches was again before the Management Committee of tiie New Zealand Rugby Union at its meeting on Saturday. The chairman (Mr S. S. Dean) explained that the Manawhcnua Union had notified that their team was going into camp for four days prior to. their match against Hawkes Bay. A- telegram had been received from the president of the Manawatu-Horowhenua Union (Mr A. M. Ouglov) asking under what rule rhe New Zealand Union plac-. ed and embargo upon training camps. “I don’t see how we can approve of open defiance in this matter,” said Mr Dean. It was decided to telegraph to Mr Onglcy, pointing out that the N.Z. Union had taken action under the remit on the subject from the International Rugby Board, and the union-'-! resolution on the matter. Rule 37 provided that any union disobeying a ruling by the parent body could be suspended. A reply was asked for by-to- , day. It is stated that, in the event of the patent body enforcing the regulation prohibiting camps of more than two j days, the Manawhcnua Union will ar- ■ range a match to be played on Wed- j nesday, thus interrupting the continu- i ity of the camp. Mr Ongley considers that the New Zealand Union’s ruling is at this stage of the season distinctly unfair to those unions which had not previously put ! their representatives into camp. He also expresses doubt whether the union can 1 bring in such new regulation, without ' giving due notice of its intention to do so, as it affects directly conditions governing the Ranfurly Shield contests. I PALMERSTON, This Day. | The Manawhenua team has been withdrawn from camp. It will go to ! Napier on Friday to play Hawkes Bay. The Wairarapa Union has suggested i that Manawhenua should play a return ! match with them at Masterton on August 0, and the Manawhenua Union has now telegraphed to Wairarapa confirm- J ing the date. That game will be for ( the Ranfurly Shield, Manawhenua having entered a challenge to Waira- ' rapa for that trophy. .
