RUGBY FOOTBALL.
EXCITING LOCAL FIXTURE. The annual Rugby fixture between residents of Plinuner Terrace and Ballance Street will take place on the Domain this week-end. The fixture is always eagerly looked forward to and as both teams are in hard training, together with the fact that the losers make a donation to the Shannon Athletic Club’s funds, a great struggle, is anticipated. NOTES. Owing to the severe training that Plinfmer ;Terrace is undergoing, T. James (Wales) has broken down, but the management committee at great expense have been successful in . obtaining the services of George Nahkies, late of Switzers, to fill the position of centre three-quarter.
AUSTIN BANNER COMPETITION.
FOXTON (12) v. SHANNON (0)
A large crowd of: spectators gathered at the Foxton racecourse on Wednesday afternoon to witness the game between the two leading teams in the Primary Schools Competition, the first match at Shannon ending in a draw. Foxton (blue) kicked off for the forwards to invade red territory. Shannon forwards retaliated with a dribbling rush ending on the blue 25. From a scrum under the posts M. Gardiner forced. Foxton forwards followed up well to take the ball well upfield. From a serum Rickerby got the ball at his feet to dribble through the opposing backs and score well out. Ilirini made a good attempt at goal. Foxton 3—Shannon 0.
Matthews secured to pass to Hirini who made a good run, but was -well tackled. Shannon forwards 1 broke away with the ball, but Rickerby was top fast, kicking to H. Gardiner, who kicked high. The blue forwards combined in a dribbling rush ending within yards of the red line. Adams secured to try and get over, but was held up, Shannon forwards breaking away. M. Gardiner was safe and kicked high for another blue attempt to end in a 5 yards serum. The leather travelled across field to B. Coley who was pulled down in-fhe nick of time, the ball going out. From the line out Reg Coley passed to Hirini to Matthews to H. Gardiner, for the latter to make a good run and score in the corner. Foxton 6 —Shannon 0.
The Reds rallied to pen Foxton up in their 25. Froift a line out Adams secured to start a Blue forward movement ending on the other 25. Shannon worked upfield, Roach marking ’ from a centre by Matthews. His attempt to goal failed. Adams was again prominent in a Blue forward effort. M. Gardiner secured to make a good run and pass to Matthews, who made a tricky run and scored well out with B. Coley and B. Gardiner handy. Hirini missed a difficult kick. Foxton 9—Shannon 0. After the spell Foxton resumed the offensive, Matthews, Hirini and B. Coley making unsuccessful attempts to cross. Matthews kicked high for 11. Gardiner to follow up and catch Tremewan in possession. Thompson kicked for Saxon to mark. Hirini and B. Coley made another attempt to score, Coley being forced out in the corner. Shannon accepted a force. Rickerby was prominent in several solo efforts, but was unable to score. B. Gardiner made a good run, but was forced out. Shortly afterwards, Matthews nearly got over. Hirini opened up for B. Coley, but Saxon tackled well. From the ensuing scrummage Matthews dived over, making the score 12—0.
Mr R. Rangiheuea controlled the game.
