COUNTY COUNCILLOR SUSPENDED. PAHIATUA, July 9. There was an unusual incident at*the County Council meeting to-day. At the commencement of the business the council went into committee, and as the result of the deliberations passed.'in open council the following resolution: ‘ ‘ That Councillor J. D. Mathews ,be suspended from attending the meetings until such time as he conforms to the decision of the chairman to apologise to Councillor H. Whitta, to whom-he addressed most offensive words at the special meeting on June 23.” The Chairman: Under the standing orders I have power to suspend him., Most of the council will confirm, my action. , Councillor Bisset: I certainly 'think it is the right and proper course to take. • Councillor Champion: So do I. - I think it is getting a bit over the odds altogether. A man does not come thirty miles to hear that sort of talk as he is leaving the room. Councillor Mathews then addressed’, the chairman. “I understand that I am not sitting at this meeting,” he said. The Chairman: Yes. Councillor Mathews: What about my notice of motion? Is that to lapse ’because I am not here The Chairman: You can ask one of the other councillors to move it. Councillor Mathews: “That will be all right. ” With this remark he ; lft the building.
