COUNTY WORK.
GENERAL MAINTENANCE AND HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION. REPORTS BY THE ENGINEER. The County Engineer (Mr. W. N. Anderson) presented the following re- * ports for the past month, at the meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday: — ‘ ‘ During the period, owing to very unsettled and wet weather, work throughout the County has been somewhat held up and many roads have suffered considerably. i TOKOMARU RIDING:—I have very little to report on in this riding. A groyne has been erected on the eastern side of the Tokomaru Bridge. A small grader has been at work on the Main roads, and a quantity of maintenance metal has been put out. A start will be made during the coming period with the annual maintenance metalling of all roads. WIROKINO RIDING.—The majority of roads in this riding are in fair order. No. I power grader has been at work during the whole of the period in this Riding on both Main and District roads. Lorries have been engaged carting maintenance metal. The Bartholomew road gravel pit is now worked out and No. I crusher is being shifted to the settlement pit, pending the purchase of new pit in Arapaepae road. RANGER’S REPORT.—The Ranger, Mr. G. Watson, reports as follows: “Since last month’s report, I have impounded So head of wandering stock, and informations have also been handed in for the next Magistrate’s Court.’’

WAIKANAE—OTAKI SECTION— Formation w r ork on this section is practically completed and good progress is being made with the strengthening metal. Two rollers are engaged on this work.
section. —Formation work is progressing slowly on this section. Owing to wet weather it has been practically impossible to work on D’Ath’s deviation. A new fence has been erected at the deviation, and men are at present engaged fencing on Simeox's hill. Crushed foundation metal i£ still being put out from the Waitohu pit, and No. 1 roller is at work on this section. The bitumen gang finished the stretch of road from Taylor's to Waitohu bridge and ceased operations for the season. No. 60 Highway. Pott’s Creek to north boundary of Wirokino Riding.—The . plans, etc., of this section have been completed and forwarded to the Public Works Department for approval, and it is hoped to make a start with the formation work at an early date. ® Shannon-Makerua. —Formation work is still being carried out, but owing to the wet weather, progress has been somewhat slow. Approximately seven chains remains to be completed. Foundation metal is still being put out. Makerua Station-Tokomaru Bridge.— The .survey of this section has been
completed and preparation of plans, etc., are in hand. ‘ Tokomaru Bridge-North boundary ot County.—Good progress is still Ijeing made with the formation worTc, and a quantity of strengthening metal has been put out. The bridge gang are at present engaged re-newing a number of large culverts under heavy fillings. The reports were adopted.
