It is reported that a well-known Greymouth gentleman is regretting a recent visit he made to Christchurch. On arrival at an hotel, he engaged a room and had his baggage deposited there. He was then called away to answer the telephone, and on returning to his room he found that he was unable to open the door, although he had left it unlocked. The assistance of the porter was enlisted and the room was finally entered from the fire escape. The door was locked on the inside and his baggage was missing. The thief had apparently descended the fire escape with his haul and had locked the room door to delay pursuit.
