During the evening fourteen candidates addressed a large attendance of electors, being introduced by Mr Jock Ostler, who occupied the chair. Messrs Gregory, Henry, Logan and Symons comprised a ticket known, as the Liberty League, and were subject to much heckling by other candidates in their addresses.

Humorous and witty speeches of five minutes kept the large audience in an enthusiastic mood, and the result of the contest was keenly awaited. The following were the older of speeches, brackets denoting subjects:— W. H. Gregory (Tourists and Sport), F. Goldsmith (Industrial), H. Symons (Buildings and Fisheries), A. R. Blackwood (Bachelor Improvements), J. H. Roberts (Power and Nature Study), J. S. Burgis (Motor Services and Roads), K. E. G. Logan (Milk Supply and Concrete Roads), W. B. The robes and chain of office were then bestowed upon “His Worship,” and the new Mayor duly sworn in amidst rousing cheers. The Mayor and Councillors returned many thanks to the electors arid a successful debut by the Society was brought to a close. The next function under the Society’s syllabus is to take tlie form of debate in which Messrs K. S. Henry (affirmative) and F. Goldsmith (negative) will - be leaders in “Why Bachelors should be taxed.”
