SHANNON ATHLETIC CLUB'S CARNIVAL.

The above carnival, which opened in the Druids’ Hall on Thursday evening, was continued on Friday and brought to a successful conclusion on Saturday night. The attendance on Friday afternoon and particularly in the evening, was good, while on Saturday night the hall ivas packed, the various stalls holders reporting good business on each occasion, with the result that the Club, although, the total receipts were not available on Saturday night, anticijiate showing a profit well above the amount they made their objective, viz. £IOO. On Friday afternoon a baby -show was held, but the boisterous weather which prevailed, prevented many mothers venturing out with their little ones. Nevertheless, an entry of twelve bonnie babies was received. Nurse Bain carried out the duties of judge and she had an arduous task in . making her awards which were as follows: — Boy under 12 months, —Mrs Thomas ’ baby. . • _ Girl under 12 months, —Mrs L. Richardson ’s baby. % Boy under 1 year and 9 months, — Mrs R. Merwood’s baby. Girl under 1 year and 9 months,— Mrs G. Paton’s baby. The chief attraction on Friday evening was the tug-of-war competition, between the champion lightweight teams of Horowhenua and Manawatu, known as “Limiteds” representing the former, who hail from Levin and the “Low Tensions” from Palmerston The pull was for the best two out of three. Each team had a contingent of supporters and 'the contest aroused, much enthusiasm. The Levin,ites were successful in winning the first two pulls, therefore securing the trophy. It was a good exhibition, there being little between them. During the evening a number of local teams tried their strength in preparation for the competition the following evening for the medals presented by the committee. The concluding night of the -Carnival drew a large attendance, with the re-, suit that the stallholders and those conducting competitions left no stone unturned. to rake in the mighty dollar, and from reports they must have had a profitable time. The tug-or-war events and the drawing of the competitions were the chief attractions. Seven teams entered for the former each of which gave a very creditable showing, the four East road stalwarts proving the winners, which judging by the applause was a popular one.

•Later, the president of the Club (Mr J. T. Bovis).>in presenting.the medal's to the captain of the team, Mr. W. Moynihan, congratulated the team on its win, also the losers for the fine fight they.,liad all put up, eaeh event he said, had.been exciting. He then called for cheers for the winners, losers and judge (Mr. J. Curran sen.)

; A "special contest was also put on, .this being one between Mr. Jas. Curran, ’jun,, four young sons and the ’Messrs Baker Bros, of Palmerston North, the former representing Speights beer and the latter the Standard Brewery. Mr Jas Curran, of the Albion Hotel, captained his boys and Mr W. Moynihaii the visitors, the eon-

ditions being that the losers contribute £2 2s to the carnival fund. This pnll aroused as much enthusiasm as any during the evening, and was a very even go. The Curran boys put up a‘ great fight and despite the fact that their opponents had an advantage, of about eight stone in weight, they secured a victory, receiving rounds of applause. During the evening the President returned thanks to the public for the whole hearted support they had given the Club during the carnival. He also thanked all those who had assisted with the work, particularly the ladies who had so willingly given their assistance. Mr. Jas Curran, jun., who responded on behalf of the ladies, said he' had been asked to state that the work had ben a pleasure to. them and tliat they would always be ready to assist the* Club on any such ocassions. (Applause). After all the competitions had been drawn, the floor was cleared for dancing, the Maori Orchestra which had contributed items during the evening,

providing the music. At midnight, the Carnival, which was a credit to those responsible, was brought to a close. In the list of stalls published in Friday ’s issue, that of the Green and White was inadvertently missed out. This stall was in charge of Mesdamea Merwood and Terry. „ ' -
