BRIDGE LOCOMOTIVE DERAILED.
rolls down bank. DRIVER'S MIRACULOUS ESCAPE. A mishap which might have had serious consequences, • occurred at Manawatu bridge site on Saturday morning. The locomotive which is used for hauling material, etc., to the bridge site, jumped the rails and rolled down the bank, a distance of about twelve feet. It was only saved from turning completely over by a cabbage tree blocking its progress. Mr. Knapp, the driver, had a miraculous escape, as had the engine turned completely over, he pro : bably would have met with fatal injurious. As it was he escaped with a few bruises and a big fright. It took four hours to get the loco back on to the line. - In the fall it was found the castings on the wheel were broken, and these will take a day or so to repair before the engine will be in running order again.
