HUI MAI DEFEAT SHANNON.
Despite the cold wind which prevailed on Saturday afternoon there was a fair attendance of the public at the Domain to witness the. game between Hui Mai and Shannon., When these two teams met at Mank.au in the first round, Hui Mai had a decisive win, and it was generally expected that Shannon would reverse on their own ground. How ever, such was not the case, Bui Mai again proving superior to the local team. In the first spell Shannon, playing against a strong easterly wind, more than held their own against the visitors, the spell ending three all—Shannon registering an unconverted try against a penalty goal scored by the visitors just on theyall of time. From'the display thus given by the local team it was generally anticipated that in the second half, with the wind in their favour, they would be easy winners. But the unexpected happened, and the wind, which had been blowing with great. force, propped. It was early seen tEat Hui Mai was.going to be hard’to beat and as the spell progressed, this proved correct, the visiting backs proving too fast and elusive for the local rear division and during the greater part of the spell the. Reds were on the defensive. The latter a forwards did good work in. the> loose, bat failed in the scrum work and as a whole the team were lacking in combined efforts. , Shortly after the game had commenced Bevan got possession from a scrum, in midfield and facing through the opposition kicked, the. Red full-back (Campbell) taking the hall inside the 25 kicked straight up in the,air with the result that, the Wind, carried itback, a serious situation being; overcome by Roberts running back, securing the ball, and kicking into touch. ’ The Greens now had the Reds defending, the latter fortunately getting relief from a faulty kick on the line by their full-back, which Was a similar one tp the previous kick. This time it .was declared a dead,.bail.. On the ball going into play Greens attacked again and from a scrum the leather went out among their backs, a passing rush being spoilt by Roberts intercepting the ball from B. Bansfield. He sprinted off, -but the movement was pulled up by Hunt overrunning the pass from Roberts. Spurred oiiyby this effort, the Rede by short passing bouts, carried ■pltitffy their opponents’ territory, where tioin a jijie out Tohi got possession and raced to draw first blood. Hunt : took, the " kick, but the wind was : against hiia to put it over. Sharpened up by this reverse the Greens soon had their opponents on the defensive and Gardiner, getting possession, made for the line, but a pass forward spoilt a chance. Following a scrum, Maihi by fast following up got possession, and kicking over the heads of his opponents, play was returned to midfield, , where Bevan received the ball from a scrum, who after a short run, trans-. ferred to Enoka. The latter failed to take it, thus allowing P. Satherley to snap it up and race down the line to near the 25. From a line out Greens carried play to centre, where it remained for quite a while, but finally they worked it to near the line, where Reds were compelled to force. On the ball going into pljiy, P. Satherley and Hunt got away with a passing bout, which carried play well well up the field. Shortly after Bryant broke away and put in a good run down the line before being collared by K. Dalzell, near the 25 mark, where soon after the Beds were penalised; and M. Johnson was able to kick a .goal, thus making the scores level. Time was then called. Shannon 3, Hui Mai 3. On resuming Greens quickly had the Reds pressed, but the latter’s defence was. able to hold them, relief coming from a good kick by Edwards, which returned play well won the field. A free kick to Greens enabled them to return to centre, where play rhovered for some time, H. Wallis finally breaking through and passing to Enoka enabled the latter to score under the. bar, B. Bansfield converting the try. From the kick out Greens swept down the field to be sent back by a loose rush by the Red forwards, which was stopped by M. Johnson marking. The Reas returned with a vigorous attack in the visitors’ 25, but were unable to p'enetrate. the defence. A free kick to Greens and fast following up was the means of play being transferred to the centre of the field, where from a serum, H. Wallis got possession, side-stepped several opponents, and raced for the line, but a pass forwards spoilt a good chance to score. The Reds working their way back, ended in P. Satherley breaking away with the ball at his toe, which he carried to the line only to be forced. From now on the Green backs indulged in a series of passing bouts, from one of which H. Waißs \|joke away on his own, but was collared by They kept up the pressure anil Wallis passing to Bryant saw the latter score at the corner. M. Johnson failed with the kick. The Beds now took a hand at attack and had. Greens penned in’ their 25 for some minutes,, but a perial-
ty kick to. Greens earned play up the field, where for a while matters looked serious, but Campbell’s kick saved the position owing to M. Johnson knocking on. From the serum Reds got possession and attacked the Green line, but the defence held. Finally, from one of the onslaughts, Enoka, getting the ball from' a kick by Roberts and failing to get rid of it when collared, the Reds were awarded a free kick. Hunt missing a faiifly easy one. For the remainder of the game play was up . and down the field, with the advantage in Green’s favour. The match ended Hui Mai '11; Shannon 3. Mr J. Smith ably controlled the game.
