MANAWHENUA RUGBY UNION.
MEETING AT SHANNON. At the conclusion of the representative game on Saturday a meeting of the committee of the Manawhenua Union was held at Shannon. There wen? present Messrs J. Ongky, (president) C 13. Eraser (secretary)* J. Hardie, 11. Crawford, K. Eglinton, Robinson, J. O'Connor, T. Collins, S. Austin. Ryan; Anderson, M. Winiata and J. Casey. An apology for absence wan leceued from Mr. Colquhoun.-; A copy of the itinerary of the Maori 'earns' tour was received from the New Zealand Rugby Union, Saturday, Jnlj 23rd" being the date allotted .to' Manawhenua. —This date was accepted. A letter was received from the New Zealand Radio Broadcasting Co., asking the Union to forward results of their fixtures, so that they can be broadcasted during the evening.—It was agreed to supply the results The Wellington, Rugby Union wrote asking if August 27th, would be a suitable date for Manawhenua to play them at Wellington. —It '•v.--.«» decided to accept, this date providing they meet * a Wellington A team. To enable the Union to play on this datj it was decided to extend the northern tour three days, by finishing up at Wellington instead of Hamilton. An invitation was received from the Buller Rugby Union to pay. them a visit this season. It was decided to reply regretting they were unable to send a team.
In regard to the visit of the AU Blacks to South Africa, a letter was received fi'om the New Zealand Rugby Union pointing out that it would be unwise for the Union to nominate any members of. the Maori race for the trial games, in view of the colour question in South Africa. The letter also stated that all players would havj to undergo strict medical examination. The names of Messrs Hands, Cob:» and Hewittf have been submitted to the N.Z.R.U. for 'selection as referees for representatives fixtures* In respect to the design of the Union's jerseys, the previous resolution was rescinded and it was decided to purchase woollen jerseys with 4-inch blue band and half inch red and white bands.
RANFURLY SHIELD
In connection with the challenge for the Ranfurly Shield, Mr. Ongley stated that as soon as Wairarapa had won the Shield he had asked for a date, but so far none had been received. If Hawkes Bay should regain the Shield on July 9th. "their fixture with that Union on July 30th Avould stand,-but they would have to issue a challenge to make it a Shield match.
On the motion of Mr. Casey it waa resolved to issue a challenge to the holders of the Shield A further motion was also carried that in the event of Hawke's Bay regaining the Shield that the game with them on July 30th be made a Shield match. '" '• NOTICE OF MOTION. Mr. Casey gave notiee of motion "That the Union consider the advisability of playing junior representative fixtures. " EQUAL REPRESENTATION. Mr. J. O'Connor moved that they shoiild insist on equal representation with Wellington in the selection of players in the Wellington-Manawhenua team in the trial games. The return game Manawatu v. Horowjicn.ua wi-11 be played at Palmerston North, on Saturday, July 10th.
