MOTHER MARY AUBERT.
ORTRAIT IN SARJEANT GALLERY', WANGANUI. A portrait of the late Very Reverend Mother Mary Joseph Aubert has been painted by Mr Vincent Evans, A.R.C.A., of the Technical College, Wanganui. Apart from being an excellent likeness of the reverend lady it reflects feredit on Mr Evans ’ ability as an artist. The Rev. Mother Aubert was born near Lyons, France, on June 19, 1833, and arrived in New Zealand in 1860 as one of the members of a pioneer mission ltd by Bishop Pompallier. She was one of the greatest women in public Zealand has known. It was in 18.85 that she founded the order of the Sisters of Compassion at Jerusalem, on . the Wanganui River, and, in the years that followed, she and her little band of workers did noble service among the Maoris. In later years, at Island Buy, in Wellington, Mother Aubert Established the Home for Ineurables and the Home of Compassion. She waß a neer in the serviee of charity in its truest sense.
The portrait referred to above now hangs in the Sarjeant Gallery oh ex hibition, by permission of the trustees, and bears the simple inscription—--1833—1926.
“I was hungry and ye fed me, Thirsty and ye gave me drink Naked and ye clothed me, In prison and ye visited me.”
