WANDERING STOCK.
MANY CHARGES DEALT WITH. At the Levin Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M. a number of cases wore heard on the informations by ' the Horowhenim County 'ranger and the Levin Borough ratiger for allowing stock to wanaei. W. H. Mills, who did not appear, was charged that he allowed a bull to wander on the Main Highway atTokomaru on April 19th. His Worship' drew at tention to the danger of a bull being ;at large oh the main road, and imposed a fine of 10s with costs 12s. A charge of having 30 cows on Gladstone Road on April 23rd was preferred against S. N. Verity. The Count> ranger (Mr George Watson) stated th.u the cows were pn the road twice in th ■ one day. There was a fair amount of SSfe on that road; and the been on the road since the informa tion was laid. There was no previous conviction. “This is wholesale grazremarked His Worship in imposing a fine of £2 with 12s costs. F H. F. Harvey, for allowing three cows to wander in Koputaroa Road, Koputaroa, on March 22nd, was fined with costs 10s. , , „ ' On May 2nd G. Rogers had 15 cows at large on Lindsay Road. He pleaded ’guilty, and stated that the affair was an accident. iThe .Ranger stated that •the defendant 7 had told him he turne.. the cows out because he ' was short oj feed for them. *A fine of £l, with costs 12s, was imposed. , , • C V. Cheeseman was charged that on May 6th he had 18 cows running on Koputaroa Road. He .was fined xl, with costs 12s. J. Hughes, for having 24 -;ows and three heifers at large on road, Tokomaru, was fined £2, with costs 12s. J. Sullivan was charged that or. May 6th he 3 had one cow and a heifer call running on Koputaroa Road, Koputaroa The Ranger stated that the defendant, wab an employee of the County Council; he had ro land on which to run hist-cow, and had been running it on the Toad for a considerable time. The woman was very abusive, indeed when - spoken to about it. • A fine of £l, with' costs 12s, was imposed. E. Guy, for having two cows and one heifer calf running on the County road, Tokomaru, on March 19, was fined £2 with costs 12s, there being three previous convictions against him. E G. Williams, for having oiye cow and one calf on the County road, Tokomaru, on March 19th, was fined 10s, with costs 12s. The question of a damaged fence entered into the case in which J. C. Olive- ' crona was charged that on May 18tli he allowed 21 cows to be at large on the Levin-Shannon road, to which he pleaocd guilty. He stated that the property, bordered the road at the foot of kara hill, and boulders rolling down had broken the fence down. If he was to put up a new fence, it would be"'broken down again at present; but th< road was going to be repaired. He had never allowed cows to graze on the toads. : The Ranger stated that there was a broken fence protecting the traffic on the road near the gully; defendant’s boundary fence was below the hill altogether. This was, a secona offence. The Magistrate pointed out that the obligation was on every land owner to fence his land securely and keep his stock in. Defendant stated that since the date of the charge he had shifted the edws from this paddock. He added that in places the wires of the fence could not be seen owing to the metal crumpling the fence right down. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £l, with costs 12s. » SHANNON OASES. The Shannon batch of cases was then dealt With. . The informations were laid by Mr J. A. Swindlehurst, Borough ranger, and the Council was.re presented by Mr E. T. Moody. George Quarrie was charged with having allowed a cow to wander in Stout Street on February 23rd; also with having one at large in Grey Street bn March 26th, and one in Claphan-. Street on May 19th. The Ranger stated that the defendant had been warn ed'on two occasions. A fine of 10s, with costs 10s, on each the first two charges was imposed, and a fine of £l, with costs 10s, on the third charge. . For allowing a. horse to wander m Whittaker Street, Shannon, on February 26th, W. H. McKenzie was fined IQs, with costs 10s. ’ Mrs M. Davis was charged with having allowed a cow and a heifer to wander in Sheehan Street on March 26th, and with haviiig allowed two cows to wander in Thompson Street on April 25th. The Ranger stated that the defendant had been warned on several , occasions. A fine of £l, with costs 10s was imposed on each charge. In the case of Roland Hayes, charg ed with having allowed a horse to stray in Grey Street, on February 26tli, Mr Moody stated that the horse wandered into the borough from the metal pit, where defendant was employed. The penalty was 10s, with costs 10s. H. Murdoch was fined £l, with costs r 10s, in respect of a cow wandering in , Nathan Terrace on May Ist. For allowing three cows to be at large in Bryce Street, on March 9th, J. Holden was fined 10s, with costs 10s. „ • S. W. Carter, whom the Ranger referred to as an old offender, was fined - £l, wifh costs 10s,. for having allowed a horse to wander in Stout Street on March 9th. A fine of 10s, with costs 10s, was imposed on Bert Sands for having allowed a cow to wander in Graham Street on March 9th.
