A, smoke concert will be held by the members of the Shannon Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club in the Druids ’ Hall on Saturday evening, May 28th.

For insobriety one Saturday, two men were arrested. They were charged with drunkenness yesterday morning before Mr. E. J. S. Spencer, J. P., and each fined 10/- and costs.

While two small boys sons of Mr C. o’Began, of Mangahao, were chppping wood, one accidentally struck the other on the head with the axe inflicting, a nasty wound which necessitated five stitches being put in.

A collision ocsuTed between two motor lorries in Ballance Street yesterday morning, with the result that one of the vehicles, suffered a broken windscreen, the driver receiving cuts on the. face and hands from the flying glass.

A large quantity of timber is now in stack at the Public Works Department's sawmill at Mangahao. It is understood that this timber has been cut at the mill in readiness for the Palmerston North railway deviation;

A mail; named John Ooulthard wa3 arrested on Saturday evening by the local police on a warrant issued from New Plymouth charging him With failing to comply with a maintenance order. He will be charged at New Plymouth today.

Mr. Harry Murdoch, who has been an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital for the past ten days, returned home yesterday. Mr. Murdoch, who is suffering from a throat trouble, has to reenter the institution again in about a fortnight !s time to undergo further treatment.

A meeting of ladies who are willing to co-operate with the members of the Shannon Athletic Club in the running of a three nights’ carnival to raise funds for asphalting the cycle track at the Domain, will be held in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening at 7.30 p.m.

The Shannon Choral Society had another very good practice last week, notwithstanding so many being away for holidays. Mrs Gregory, of Mangaore, was the soloist for the evening and sang in very good style “Mate o’Mine” and “A Farewell”. The concert is drawing near and members are asked to make a special effort to attend the remaining practices. The preparations are well in hand for the social'to be held on the 27th and those who attend may look forward to a really good time.

Two eases of infectious disease—one of scarlet fever and one of tuberculosis —were notified to the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday by the Health Inspector as having occurred in tlie County during April.

The championships at the Manawatu Competitions were awarded as follows: Lady elocutionist, Muriel Craig (Wanganui) ; Lady vocalist, Doris Symes (Wanganui); Gentleman vocalist, H. W. Smales (Waikato); Girl elocutionist, Mariono Brock (Wanganui); Boy elocutionist,, Cedric Muir (Wellington); Dancer, Joyce Hayward (Feilding): Choir, All Saints (Palmerston North); School choir, Convent (Palmerston N.).

A petition, signed by Messrs Kilsby Bros, and 14 others, praying for the fencing of a drain on the south side of the- Koputaroa-Foxton road was presented to the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday. It was set out that the drain was a danger to travelling stock, being .deep, with a soft bottom. The matter was referred to the Councillors for the riding, to be considered with the estimates.

The Horowhenua County Council oil Saturday received a letter from Mr J. Kebbell, of Levin, asking that they pass a resolution opposing the proposed change of the name, of Palmerston North to Manawatu. The Chairman fCr Monk) explained that the matter liad come up in a previous letter from Mr Kebbell, when the Council merely questioned the wisdom of changing the name and then let the matter drop. Mr Kebbell now wished them to endorse their opinion by passing a resolution. The Chairman then put the matter to the vote, and the Council unanimously decided against the proposed name.
