RUGBY FOOTBALL.
THE BEBBINGTON SHIELD. CHALLENGE BY BUSH UNION. A challenge for the Bebbington Shield was received this morning by Mr ./. Casey, secretary of the Ilorowlienua Rugby District'Council, from the Bush Union. This is the second challenge this season, the first having come from the Dannevirke Sub-Union’. Both matches will probably be played in Levin: after the first game the shield will be held here for the match against the Bush reps. A stern contest is expected from the outset, Dannevirke having the makings of a strong team, together with the services this season of Elvev, the crack wing thiee-quarter.
HOROWHENUA DISTRICT COUNCIL
MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE.
The weekly meeting of the management committee of the Horowhenua Rugby District Council was held in Williams’s tea rooms last evening, there being present: Messrs'J. J. O’Connor (president), J. W. Procter (vice-presi-dent), W. N. Anderson (County), M Winiata (senior selector), A." Richards (Shannon), W. Joyce (Weraroa), J. W. Rimmer (treasurer), and J. Casey (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs W. Robson (Miranui), M. Ryder (Wanderers), W. Neville (Foxton), F. Robinson (Awahou), and S. Austin- (Foton). It was decided that the Maori-Pake-ha -match be played at Otaki on Wednesday, June Ist.
Advice was received from the Otaki Maori College Club that the college team would shortly be away on school vacation and would be unable to take the field on May 14th and 21st. It was desired that byes be arranged if possible. —The byes asked for were granted. Application was made by the Levin District High School team to have the fourth grade match against Awahou re-played, as the former team had been unable to hire a conveyance.—The application was held over in the absence of the Foxton delegates. PLAYERS’ CLUB STATUS.
Mr C. Nees, secretary of the Hui Mai Club, Manakau, wrote asking for advice as to the position of G. Rhodes, >vho. was a, member of the Otaki Club last season and who joined Hui Mai this season and played for .their seniors in three friendly matches. On Saturday last he was not allowed to play for Hui Mai, as there was some doubt whether the club would be in order in playing him, Rhodes having played as a substitute for Otaki against County on the previous Saturday.—This matter was dealt with in conjunction With applications for transfers. Wanderers’ Club applied for the transfer of E. Skilton frpm the Weraroa Club, and Of J. Ropata fforti the Otaki Club. .
On the motion of Mr Procter, seconded by Mr Anderson, it .was resolved to enforce the rule against transfers being sanctioned after N the first games of the cup fixtures. ALLEGED OBSTRUCTION.
Mr Peter Morgan, of Shannon, wrote stating that he was unable to attend the meeting with reference to his being ordered off the ground during the game between Foxton and Miranui. He remembered Mr Sands warning him for obstruction and admitted the charge, although it Was unintentional. He heeded the warning, but later was ordered off, and on that occasion he had no recollection of obstructing and did not know he was ordered off. Mr Richards said he thought Morgan was ordered off as a warning to other players. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Richards, it was resolved that the player be cautioned, and that a letter be sent to Mr Sands calling attention to the rules as to reporting offences to the Council. OUTSIDE REFEREES.
Mr Richards asked if it would be possible to appoint outside referees, so that a man from Foxton, Otaki or Shannon could referee in Levin, and vice versa. , The chairman stated that all the referees seemed to be between Levin and Manakau.
In answer to a question by the chairman, Mr Richards stated that there was only one referee in Shannon at present. The secretary pointed out that the question of travelling expenses was also involved. IMPROPERLY ATTIRED.
It was reported by* the secretary that in the senior game at Foxton on Satur day last, two Awahou and four Otaki players appeared on the field in wrongly coloured jerseys. It had also beei. reported that neither Awahou nor Otaki had a football on the ground for this match, but borrowed one from a .junior team. On the motion of Mr Casey, seconded by Mr Richards, it was resolved to fine the Awahou Club 5s and the Otaki Club 10s, being 2s 6d for each player who was not clad in the colours of his club. DEFECTIONS. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Casey, seconded by Mr O’Connor, that the Wanderers Juniors and Otaki Thirds, having defaulted for two Saturdays in succession, be deemed to have withdrawn from the competition. GENERAL BUSINESS. On the motion of Mr Casey, seconded by Mr Rimmer, a vote of thanks was passed to Mrs J. J. O’Connor, who at short notice had prepared a beautiful wreath for the funeral of the late Mr Rewi Moynihan, of Shannon. Mr Joyce referred to the difficulty experienced by the Levin school team in getting a conveyance. He pointed out that there were buses licensed for the purpose of carrying children to the localJDistrict High School; and he wondered if the New Zealand Rugby Union could do something in the direction of enabling the bus. owners to secure special permits to convey the school- footballers to matches. The chairman said the suggestion wa|i a good one; and it was decided to refer it to the parent body.
