An accident which, but for the prompt action of the guard might have brought disaster to the Wellington-Nspier express occurred on Good Friday when the train was proceeding at full speed about a mile south of Marakeke, which is between Takapau and Waipukurau. The fifth vehicle from the lower end of the train dropped its front bogie on to the track; the axle shot upwards and one wheel penetrated the floor of the carriage near where an old lady was sitting. Fortunately Guard Chesterman was in the van at the time, and he was able to apply the Westinghouse brake immediately.
