ELEPHANTS IN MAD STAMPEDE
I TERRIFIED BY CAT IN NEWARK STREETS. ELDERLY WOMAN TRAMPLED TO DEATH. NEW YORK, April 18. At Newark, New Jersey, three elephants running wild in the heart of the business district trampled an elderly woman to death, injured two men, and threw handreds of women-sheppers into a panic. At the height of the midday trafficrush the animals were being led int«> the stage entrance of a treatre, where they were scheduled zo give a performance following a parade through the streets, when a cat appearing from an alley-way terrified them. Thvy broke from the trainers and charged wildly through the crowd that had gathered to see them.
Police reserves were called out at A it took forty patrolmen and three trainers after a chase of a mile to corral and quieten the beasts.
