OREGAN TIMBER IMPORTS.
AN AMERICAN MEEGEE. TO STOP PEICE CUTTING. The New Zealand isawmillems who aie living under the shadow of the menace of cheaper Oregon pine which is competing so seriously with our own timbers will be interested in some news brought by Mr. E. D. Pike, a well; known Sydney sawmiller, who is on board the Niagara completing a .tour of the world. While at San Francisco he ffound that negotiations were in progress for the absorption of some smaller " outfits' ' instrumental in the price-cutting that had resulted in sending so much cheap timber to New Zealand and Australia. The idea is for the big mills to buy up these smaller men. There is no doubt they are not making anything out of the trade, and once these sawmills (price-cutters) are out of action, Mr. Pike thinks it is a certainty that prices will advance. New Zealand sawmillers are vitally interested in the problem of Oregon and amalgamations will undoubtedly ease the present situation as they cannot compete with the enormous output of these American mills when price cutting is resorted to.
