USING UP REMNANTS

Remnants of cretonne can be utilised in many different ways. If the pieces are too small to do duty "on their own," several scraps of harmonising or contrasting hues may be stitched together to form bands or squares for counterpanes or cushioncovers, and so on. A plain linen bedspread of blue or green for instance is always considerably improved if adorned with a cretonne patchwork border. Casement curtains might be decorated to match. Larger pieces may be used in other novel' ways. A square of oblong fragment of cretonne, gorgeously patterned with glowing poppies or peonies, makes an effective "splasher" for the back of the wash-stand—especial-ly where the toilet waro is of china or pottery in some plain unobtrusive colour. . Patterned china wouia be better served with a "splasher" of self-coloured linen to tone with hues on jug and basin. Afternoon tea clothes of fine linen may have a motif cut from a remnant of sprigged cretonne sewn to each corner with excellent effect. A yellow cloth looks charming when trimmed with squares of powder blue sprinkled with tiny flower clusters m yellow orange and green. A teacosy with little trouble may be decorated to match. ' White linen can be decorated with blue and white printed material.'

Pouffes and tuffets can also be redecorated with odd remnants of striped linen. A particularly happy combination is that of black and orange material, and plain blue. When using stripes do not overdo the different colours. Always combine printed materials with plenty of plain ont-s to obtain the best effects from both.
