KAWIU ROAD DRAINAGE.
REQUEST BEFORE THE COUNTY COUNCIL. CONFERENCE WITH MUNICIPAL BODY. Messrs M.J. .°.ihan and D. S. Mackenzie waitec- on the County Council on Saturday in reference to their request for the relief of Kawiu road from flood water—a rurUor which a larger deputation brought to the notice of the Levin Borough Council on Monday evening. Cr. Kilsby introduced'the deputation to the County Council, and the chairman (Cr. G. A. Monk) stated Mint the Coanvil .would hear them in the circumstances, although the necessar\ notice had not been given. The requirements of the residents, as hia-ed tc the Borough Council, were outlined by Messrs Suhan and Mackenzie. Briefly these are that one of two* alternative schemes should be adopted for draining the' flood water into, the Borough water races, the eost (£64" 13s Id or £110) to be apportioned to the Borough Council, the County Council and the petitioneis in the proportion cf one-third ea"h. Mr Mvkenzie said that the liability l for removing the water Avas not entirely on the ratepayers, but they Avero prepared to share a c.rtain amount of the burden. ■ The Chairman: Though the Water may be in the County, it will eventually have to go into :he borough. _ ls the Borough Council prepared to give any assurance that it Avill take the water. Mr Mackenzie: Yes; they will take it into York Street if the work is don?, to their satisfaction. Cr. Kilsby: The Borough Council " recognised that something should come ... to them from the County as well as from Messrs Suhan and Mackenzie. The Chairman: There is nothing to prevent the Borough Council making ?n arrangement with the residents outside the Borough without bringing the -, County into it except as a contributing body. We seem to have been sidestepping as to Avho should do the busfness. The Borough Council consider that it is our next move. We cannot do much unless we have an assurance from the Borough Council that they are prepared to take the Avater. Our Engineer, some time ago, prepared estimates of the cost. They all deal with taking it to York Street. It Avas suggested that some of the Avater be taken part of the AvaySin pipes and partly in the w&tec table. " Mr Suhan: They are divided on that question of pipes and water table. The Chairman* It materially affects, the cost. . Or. Catley said, this matter Avas the subject of negotiations betAA r een the councillors for the riding and Messrs Suhan and Mackenzie some time ago. They understood that whatever occurred Avas purely an informal matter, and , that the Council had no authority to take any steps in the matter. The councillors met the ratepayers on the grojnd and talked the subject over, but could not make any progress Avith it before getting an estimate. Cr. Catley asked for authority for a committee to negotiate further Avith the Borough Council. The Chairman: I Avas going\o suggest that. Cr. Catley added that the key t;> the po&ition Avas the failure of the old Wirokino Road Board to provide an outlet for the water on its natural fall. On the motion of the Chairman, it Avas resolved that the councillors for the Wirokino Riding and the Engineer he a committee to confer Avith the pro-perty-oAA'ners interested and the Borough Council.
