REPORT-OF THE ENGINEER,
. TKe-report of the County engineer (Mr. W. N. Anderson), which was adopted at the monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County. Council on Sat as under:— < 'During the period, the weather has 'been. : fine and work throughout the . 'Coulity./has been carried out in a -very 'sati'siactory manner. : Topiparu .'Biding.—The roads m tins Eiding'are allin fair order, and one oi the power graders have been constantly employed trimming and re-grading. ThiMakerua Drainage Board's bridge gang .. are engaged re-building the bridge over the Kara stream on the western side oi railwhy. The contractors have complettheir contract, .forming, metalling, etc., Ashlea-Teinukanui Road, and I wULjnake a final inspection of the work during next week. W4r.okiuo Biding.-7-Everything in this RiHing.,are all in fair order, and, one of power has been, working on part of the period. Groyne main road and several district roads, netting is on hand ; for groyne, upper Gladstone Road, and this work will be 'put in hand in a day or two. Timber has been ordered for the bridge over 'the Hokio.stream and a start will 1 ■>jnude with this work whenever the timber comes ;to hand. I have made arrangements for the -use of the pile * driver for the bridge on the KoputaroaFpxien.. Bead, .this plant will be avail*ablej,in, about'three weeks' time. Satisfactory progress is being made with the,formation ..work, on the Ohau West road,,extension, , 6tak'i and.Te Jloro Ridings—l have nothing' of importance ,to report on in these Ridings, everything being in very'fair order. The new bridge on the Hautere Cross road, over the Man-., gaone stream,, has been completed. A culvert on the Te Horo beach road was lowered, and work on the overflow, channel through Mt. Barber's property has been attended 'to. Riding • Requirements. Cr.'Whyte stated that Kahika Road, in the Tokpmaru Biding, had just been put -in order,, but if the water-table was not. attended to the money would be thrown, away,. He would like the engineer, to put.on two. roadmen to attend to it. He also asked that the wooden culvert leading to Mr. Liggins' property be taken out and a pipe put in, as,', the present culvert had been the cause, of oncer, two..accidents. Cr/Kilsby (Wiroluno Riding) stated that the Foxton Road required attention'in many places. The metal was coming .off the'road, and unless it was brought' in,"the road would get into a bad state again. The engineer stated that the power grader would not be available until the end of this week. Cr.- Kilsby mentioned that there was a dead, horse in one of the drains, near the Foxton road. It had been there for • romedays, and the ratepayers wanted it removed, as it had become a public "nuisance* The ownership of the horse could not be ascertained. -. The chairman: If it is a nuisance we have, to get it out. The engineer was instructed to nave the carcase removed and to endeavour to find the owner. Cr. Barber asked that stock be prevented'from travelling south along the roaa on. the southern side of the Makerua school, where there is a large cutting, with a drop of 20 feet. The matter was referred to the engmCr. McLeavey (Wirokino Riding) ' stated that two; or three of his neigh- ' hours,at.Ohau had asked him about the deviation of the water race, at Mr. Dittmer's which ran down to Mr. Evans'. The bridge was so high that the dram hadi to be plugged to get the water through,., with, the result that it ran along the road and was wasted. The engineer was instructed to report on the matter. Cr. Ryder (Otaki Riding) said he had interviewed a member of the Otaki '" Racing Club in reference to the club's request for the cleaning of the dram on the southern side of the Rahui Road ' f Probably "no more would be heard from ' the club about the matter. He would "see the secretary, and he thought that when he had-explained the position to him it would be all right. The version '" given by the Chairman of the Council was correct. (The chairman had explained that this was not a drain, but * a pit dug bv the old Otaki Road Board, years ag», in order to obtain material to mako the road.)
