COUNTY ENGINEER’S REPORT. The following report on Main Highways was presented by the County Engineer (Mr. W. N. Anderson), to/ the Horowhenua County Council) at its monthly meeting on Saturday:— No. 1 Highway. Waikanae-Otaki Section. —Good progress is being maintained with formation and earthwork. The widening has been practically completed between Hadfield pit and Waikanae. Two gangs are engaged in building shoulders and a gang is employed ditching. All culverts have now been put in on this section. The foundation consolidation is well in hand and the section between Te Horo and Otaki bridge should be finished within the next ten days. The bitumen gang is making good progress. One and a-quarter miles of paving has been completed at the Waikanae end, and a start was made south of Te Horo during the week. A liqld-up in this work was caused through the non-arrival of a shipment of bitumen but this has now 'been overcome by transferring a quantity held in reserve in the Levin yard. Recently, the paving work on this section has been considerably delayed owing to the unreasonable attitude of a certain section of motorists. At, times, these ..people refuse to stop when requested to do aoj and have narrowly escaped Tunning the workmen down, and where new bitumen is being laid, 'the road has. been badly damaged. The gang;pf pien engaged in this work* has at aii times given the travelling public every" help and consideration, and in future, it is my intention to take proceedings against qffenders. Otaki-Manakau Section.—Earthwork and shouldering on the sub-section from the Otaki railway to Taylor’s has been completed, and foundation strengthening- will be proceeded with almost immediately.. The work on Sim--cox’s HiU has been stopped pending the removal of a number of telegraph poles ; by 'the. Telegraph Department. Owing to this hold-up it was found necessary to discharge 18 men,^ * . ; No. 60 Highway. Sliannbn-Makefud Section.— Good progress is being made with the formation and . widening on this section, a gang of 24 men being engaged in the work. _ v' r .
