SHANNON'S HIGHWAY.

PROPOSED FORMATION. COUNTY COUNCIL TO ASSIST, At the monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday, a letter was received from Mr J. • Bovis, Town Clerk of Shannon, stating that the Borough Council was considering the matter of permanently surfacing the Main Highway through the Borough. The County Council was asked if it Would allow its engineer to give the. Shannon Borough Council an estimate 4 for the work required to bo carried out. The Borough Council also desired, if possible, to hire the County plant when it is working in the vicin ity of Shannon. The chairman said lie thought that -the Council should give favourable consideration to the first matter mentioned. Shannon was a small borough, and it was quite evident that in surfacing the main road it would not be in a position to supply the machinery necessary. While the County should not do anything detrimental to expediting its own work, it should help Shannon in this connection. There was not more than' three-quarters of a mile of road to be done, and it would be much more economical for the Borough, and also from the County’s point, of view, if it was uridertaken by the County Council. The other request from Shannon —for the use of the County machinery—was just a formal one, and the Council might indicate thatr it would be favourably considered whpn the time arrived —not necessarily by hiring out the machinery, but so that the County would do the work and Shannon pay the cost of it. Cr,. Ryder remarked that Otaki wai in the same position in regard to roads as Shannon. The chairman pointed cut that the Main Highway through Shannon war referred to —not any street leading into the town. It was different from going off the track. Cr. Ryder: We might deal with tinwhole thing later on. Cr. McLeavey asked if the Shannon Borough would do the preparatory work on the road. * The chairman said that the County would have to supply the crushed metal. He presumed that the Shannon Borough would hand over the work to the County to carry out. Cr. Ryder: Do they, want it done when our works gets there?

The Chairman: At a time convenient to us. ,

On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Civ Ryder, it was resolved that the Shannon Borough's request for the County Engineer’s services be referred to the Works Committee. With regard to the remaining portion of the subject, the chairman suggested that the Council favourably consider doing the work at the opportune time. Cr. Bryant: I think you have taken the' right view. Cr. Kilsby: It is only right that, we -rhould assist them in doing this work. We should give them every considera.i ion, and do the work when it falls chm for us. It may be that they wish to net the road ready themselves. ° It was decided to send a favourable ■ eply to the Shannon Borough Council’s request; and that the details be arranged later.
