SHANNON ATHLETIC CLUB MEETING.

A GOOD DAY’S SPORT. The fourth animal sports meeting of the Shannon Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was held in the Domain on Saturday. The day was fine and there was a splendid attendance, over 600 persons paying for admission, while there must have been as manychi dren, who were admitted free. They was net a dull moment during the afternoon, there being as many as three events on at the one timeThe committee are to be complimented on gatting the events throughout the day, off to time, each event darting to time. The running and cycling events filled well, and some close finishes were witnessed, the handicappe , Mr Gv Watson, of Levin, thus proving that he had the winners well concealCd The dancing events were ,new items for the Club and although they did not draw big entries, proved a splendid attraction,. The young performer* acquitted them selves most! creditably, drawing forth applause from the spec tators. B At the conclusion of thrSe events, Mr Jas. Curran, who at one time was a well-known exponent ot the Irish Jig, gave an exhibition ot this dance, showing that, despite nis years, he can still give a creditable performance. , . L As is usual, the wood-chopping events aroused a lot of interest. This year the Clulfcput on a fourteen inch, underhand championship chop, with a first prize of £lO, second £3, but did not meet with a very good response from axemen as only five faced the staitei. They were evenly matched and tn contest proved ‘exciting, C. Gartner (Mangahao) after slipping off his log, defeating D. McKenzie (Mangahao) by a narrow margin. Gartner earlier in the day also won the 14-inch maiden underhand chop. The standing chop was won by H. Hutchins. , Good performances were put up in the cycling events by C. Dunn, of Levin, who from scratch won the two, three and five mile events and was second in the one mile, in v/hich he won fits heat. He received a great ovation m his victory in the five mile, as his opponents had received big handicaps and he had a lot of ground to make up. Mr E. G. Sutherland, the champion high lumber, was a competitor at the meeting. ‘ In the high jump he cleared six feet, failing when the bar was raised another inch. He was giving the winner, P. Payne, twelve inches handicap, and the latter, who is a beginner, clearing sft 4in., made Sutherland s chance of victory a difficult one. Sutn erland also put. up a good performance by throwing the javelin 145tt 4m, •which event he won. , ■ The officials and committee are to be complimented on the excellent day > sport provided. The secretarial duties in the hands of' Mr-T. Kohika, assisted by Mr A. Birchall, wore efficiently car tied out, while Mr G. Watson's despatching of the fields in the ruimiT-L. = a nd cycling events was excellent, llie efforts of these gentlemen, with the President, Mr-J. T.
