The Railway Department wrote with reference to the representations made by the association regarding the special rate on butter and cheese for distances of 176 miles and over, stating that it was now conveying over long distances dairy produce which would otherwise 4iave been forwarded by other means of transport. It was regretted that no alteration in the rates and provisions governing the carriage of butter and cheese for distances of 170 miles and over could be made. At a previous meeting of the association, it was decided that Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., be requested to again look into the matteiv The chairman stated that producers in the Wairarapa were putting their produce on the road and saving 5s per ton on the carting. . "I; have been told authoritatively," said the chairman, "that if we are to get a reduction we will get it now. It is for us to move as quickly as possible." On the motion of Mr. Hansen, it was decided that Mr Nash be approached to arrange for a deputation from the association to meet the Prime Minister, as Minister of Railways, whenever possible. DAY-OLD CALVES. A scheme successfully inaugurated in New Plymouth last year—that of farmers selling day-old calves" to freezing works and having them shipped to Italy—was mentioned by the chairman, who wondered if the scheme could be extended to the Manawatu. He understood that the New Plymouth results had been very satisfactory—4a 6d was obtained from a skin for a start — and probably the local freezing works could be induced to give the scheme a trial. **> Following a brief discussion it fwas decided that the secretary write to the Feilding and the Longburn works and enauire if . the managements would - carry out the work and if so upon what terms.
