Walker, left at 5 a.m. on Friday for a tramp across the Tararua range with Eketahuna as their objective. The weather conditions were perfect for such a trip and good progress was evidently made, as their smoke signals were seen from Levin yesterday afternoon, issuing from the top of the range. This afternoon telephone advice was received from Eketahuna that the party had arrived at Putara, all being well and having had a good trip. The news Avas received in Eketahuna at 1.30 p.m., and a car was immediately .sent out to bring the explorers to ihe town.

The first .smoke which was believed to be one of the signals, was observed at midday yesterday,, rising from behind the high ridge that runs northeast from Mt. Dundas. This was visible from Hokio Beach all through the afternoon, rising and . falling on the sky-line. The party were to reach tin; Mangahao valley on Friday night, and it was calculated that they would bo on Dundas on Saturday and would tra verse the northerly ridge on Sunday. They were to come out at Putara this morning, when they intended to get into telephonic communication with Eketahuna, 10 miles away.
