BATHS CUSTODIAN ALARMED. AMUSING MISHAP AT NAPIER. Recently, in Wellington, the clothes of a little girl were found in the dressing sheds at the Municipal baths and when a search was jnade she was found drowned. A few day s later the caretaker of the Napier Municipal baths was horrified when, after closing tims, his assistant discovered in a cubicle a bundle of woman's clothes. Immediately a search of the pool and of all the bath premises was but .vith no result. The caretaker and his assistant rushed out to the beach md stumbled through the shingle in the darkness, but again there was no sign of the miasing bather, went to end his days on the shores oi came naturalised-there, and finally the beautiful Lake Como, where he hanged himself on a tree. "I am taking my life because a can no longer support solitude and boredom. When I was an ordinary working man in New York I was happy, but now that I possess millions I am infinitely sad and prefer The caretaker went to the police, and on telling them all he knew, a young constable recollected that he had seen a young woman with an overcoat covering her bathing attire, passing through the town. After a search, her address was discovered, and the cause of all the anxiety answered the 'phone herself.

Her explanation wa s simple. Not being conversant with the rules of the baths, she w ent out on to the beach after her dip and attracted, by the splendour of the night, did not return until after nine o'clock to find the baths locked up. She knocked for some time, but, obtaining no response, had to borrow an overcoat to go home. No one was more surprised than she when she heard the anxious enquiries as to her wellfare over the 'phone.
