FIRE PROTECTION.
MEETING OF CITIZENS TO BE . CALLED. As the outcome of Friday morning's fire, the question of purehasingfire fightting appliances was discussed by the Council at their meeting on Tuesday evening. . Or Richardson opened up the matter when he suggested that the Council should purchase a length of hose, this drawing from Cr Spencer a motion, "That the Council should procure 500 feet of hose and the necessary hydrants, nozzles, etc." He said that the lireplugs should be brought to the proper surface and marked. The plant would be the property of the Borough Council and a nominal charge be made for the use of same. It was estimated the cost of the apparatus mentioned would be about £7O. Cr Richardson seconded the motion. Or Downes said that .while agreeing the appliances were necessary he did not. see why the Council should shoulder the whole of the cost. The business people should pay half. He did not think it fair to ask people living outside the business area to contribute. He recommended that a meeting of the business people be called to meet the Council. Cr Thwaites suggested that a voluntary subscription list be opened and the Council subsidise £1 for £l. Cr Spencer stated the Council had just spent £7OO on the municipal building which had brought its value up to £I3OO and they must protect it. If the Council purchased 200 feet of hose a,nd appliances sufficient to warraint their own needs, the business people should procure the extra. Cr Downes said the Council's needs would cost nearly as much as that for the 500 feet and appliances. He did not think the business people would refuse to come in. Cr Spencer stated he would incorporate in his motion that a meeting.of citizens be called to co-operate with the Council with a view to finding ways and means to purchase the plant. This was agreed to and the motion was carried. It was agreed that the meeting of citizens be held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday, March Ist, at 7.30. On Cr. Downes' motion it was resolved that all fireplugs be uncovered and brought to the surface and marked.
