SHANNON SCHOOL PICNIC.

AM ENJOYABLE OUTING. Saturday was the red-letter day of the year for the school children of Shannon, the occasion being the annual school picnic at Plimmerton. Long before the appointed time for the train’s departure the station platform was thronged with, children and. adults, and when the train, which also had aboaid about 200 persons from Linton, left for Plimmerton, this number was added to by 304 adults, 70 senior scholars and 324 school children. In Shannon the weather did not look too promising for a fine day, but fortunately the clouds cleared and at Plimmerton the weather was all that could be desired. On arrival the picnickers lost no time in enjoying themselves, the day being spent in bathing, games and sports. The arrangements made by the committee and teachers left nothing wanting, for which they are to be complimented. The return for home was made shortly after 4 p.m. and during the journey the . children were well supplied with lollies and fruit, Shannon being reached shortly after 6 p.m., the majority being tired, but all were happy. The Committee’s thanks are due to Messrs J. W. Murray, J. Bovis, J. Riches, and others for providing funds for prizes for the children’s races. Messrs White, Morgan, Bovis, Cronquest and others organized the races, and Mr White and his staff are entitled to credit for the trouble they took in marshalling and looking after the pupils. Messrs J. V. Burns, J. Riches, T. Watterston and others assisted the Committee in issuing tickets, collecting fares, etc., as a number of the Committee could not attend owing to illness or on account of business, amongst them being the chairman (Mr R. L. Tippler), who has been indisposed for some time. Thanks are . also due to the citizens and business people of Shannon for subscribing funds-to pay for the scholars* fares and provide expenses, etc, and to Miss Roach for selling tickets during the week; Messrs Hyde and Wilkinson for advertising picnic on screen; and the people in general for attendance at the picnic.
