SPEED OF POWER BOARD LORRIEb A complaint that their lorries wore being driven too fast was made by Mr T. G. Vincent at the meeting of the Horowhenua Power Board on Tuesday. He said he had seen them tearing along at from 30 to 35 miles an hour, which was not a fair thing for any truck. The drivers should be instructed to travel at a reasonable rate. "I have seen them careering along the roads faster than I drive a car," he added. Mr A. Boss said he had tried to catch one of the drivers one night, but he could not do so when travelling in his ear at 30 miles an hour. The Engineer (Mr. J. A. Smith) said there were occasions when it was necessary to drive fast. Mr "VV. E. Barber: I thought I could get ahead of a Ford one night, but I couldn't. Mr Vincent: They are driven much too hard Before I was on the Board, I happened to be at the Post Office with the secretary of the Board one evening and we saw a car go through the town at an enormous speed. Yon cannot travel through Otaki at more chan 12 miles an hour. Mr A. Seifert: The cost goes up tremendously with a vehicle driven too fast and the tyre bill is two of three times as great. The Chairman asked for a motion so that the Engineer could act on it.

Mr Vincent moved that the Engineer be instructed to intimate to the drivers' of motor trucks that they must not di*re at an excessive speed. Mention was made by Mr Soifert of an accident that happened to a Palmerston lorry a fortnight ago between Makerua and Tokomaru. This lorry had seven or eight men aboard and in trying to avoid an oncoming motor vehicle the lorry shot over the bank two of the men being injured. The explanation given was the stock excuse That the stealing gear went wrong.
