CALLING THE POWER STAFF.

ZV A BUREAU DIFFICULTY. f OPENING FEE PROVIDES A ■f SOLUTION. &, ; )" A difficulty in obtaining bureau tele- •'*-' • phone connections at certain times from ;■-*' Tokomaru was referred to at the meet\i ing of the Power Board on Tuesday. <£■ Mr. W. 11. Gunning said that there had a,/ been breakdowns in the electrical supt ' ply occasionally and Tokomaru people i% were handicapped by, the fact that the ~ ' bureau was closed at 5 p.m. and conse- ••_•- quently they could not get into eom- ; \ munication with the Shanribn sub-sta- !< , tion. This meant that on such occay. ' sions they had to send a man with a ': message to Shannon. He asked if it t . would be possible to have a telephone j? plug put in which would afford a per- * ' manent connection with Shannon. Mr. Gunning added that the matter had been mentioned to him by Mr. Judd. A breakdown had occurred while separai ting was in progress, and it took a long :-' time to send a man to Shannon. Most of the consumers of current had tele- :,., phones, and he thought that a perman- « eut plug could be installed as was done / . for the doctor. , , Mr. T. 'G. Vincent said he thought ''.' that it would be a simple matter for Tokomaru to plug through to Shannon •■yid leave the connection on all night. Mr. Gunning said that on the occasion which he referred to, it happened that the Shannon exchange was closed. The engineer (Mr. J. A. Smith) : That is the difficulty. Shannon is not an all-night office. We are plugged through to Shannon, and the same obtains with Otaki; but even if Toko-

muru could get Levin, you could not plug everybody fhrougli. You have only got to pay an opening fee to send a message right through. Mr. A. Seifert stated that he had been able to ring Tokomaru by paying an opening fee. The attendant lived on the premises. Mr. Smith: We discussed it with the telegraph engineer, and he said anyone could ring Tokpmaru and get through. They can be plugged through to Levin, and we can always get our man at Shannon.' In answer to a question by the chairman, Mr. .Smith stated that the Board could .get into toueh with its representative at Paekakariki by means of a special bell. The chairman remarked that any such arrangement could not be worked at Waikana?, because the doctor was plugged through after five o'clock. Mr. Smith: You cannot get every-. ..- body. There was no further discussion, and the matter dropped.
